Nuvi 750 Owners Battery Qusetion

My question is on a Nuvi 750, when connecting to a 110V wall charger, does the BATTERY ICON WITH THE LIGHTING BOLT APPEAR.
When I plug the Nuvi into my Garmin OEM 110V wall charger, the battery icon immediately disappears and only the time is showing.

Here is my situation. My nephew from out of state shipped me his 750 to do firmware updates and add POI's since he is unable to do it. As soon as I received it I saw the battery was at half strength and quickly was losing power and brightness to the screen. I plugged it into the PC and worked on it and left it there for 8 hours. I never got it to full strength.

I then plugged it into my Garmin OEM 110V wall charger and noticed as soon as I plugged in there was no battery life icon showing, however did charge slightly as I was changing settings but not much. I then left it plugged into the wall charger for 10 hours and it only got to 75%. Bad battery yes, but can it be the charging circuit is defective due to not seeing the icon and only the time. If I power the Nuvi down while still connected to the wall charger, the charging battery message appears but very dimly, can hardly see it.

Since no charging icon appears and the battery will not fully charge, I am reluctant to replace the battery in fear of the possibility the charging circuitry being defective.

All the Nuvi's I've ever owned displayed the charging icon with the lightening bolt whenever plugged into my Garmin OEM wall charger. Although the unit functions when plugged into the cigarette lighter, it is an inconvenience to try to make any settings changes when on battery power since the charge quickly depletes and dims the unit to 20%.

Please advise if your Nuvi 750 shows, or does not show, the icon when using the wall charger.

Allways show charge icon

Allways show charge icon when plugged into wall or usb.

Thanks For Advising.

That's what I thought, the icon should be visible while plugged into the wall charger. For it to disappear completely indicates something wrong.

I now think it's the charging circuitry as well as a bad bad battery. I took a gamble and ordered a new battery from US seller on Ebay for 8.75 including shipping. If this doesn't cure it the loss will not be great and he can still use the unit in the car.

I just noticed both you and member Pungo who repled earlier have 760 units. Since features from model to model vary within the series, perhaps the 750 does not show the charging icon, unlikely but possible.

Hopefully an owner with a 750 can confirm it does show.

No

The 750, 760, and 780 are part of the series 7x0 and all three are identical with the exception of feature sets. Same as the 7x5 series, 755, 766, and 785.

Only Battery Replacement Will Confim

The new battery is scheduled to arrive on Monday and that will answer my question if the charging circuit is defective. Having opened the unit and inspecting, the USB connector is tight with no apparent defects so I think I can rule that out.

One last glimmer of hope is the battery itself is not causing the icon appear. My old 660 Nuvi has a two pin battery connector, I believe starting with the 7XX series they went to a 3 pin connector and I think all units now have the 3 pin connector. It may possibly be that third pin in the battery itself is bad prohibiting the icon to appear. It's just a wild guess on my part.

As long as the new battery charges and holds the charge and the unit functions, I won't be concerned if the charging icon doesn't appear. I'll post a follow up when the new battery is installed.

Follow Up

As luck would have it the vendor shipped the wrong battery, shipped me one for a Magellan unit. Took an extra week to receive. Surpridingly enough after installing it showed a full charge. I plugged it into the Garmin 110V wall outlet charger and still behaves the same, the battery icon disappears and only shows the time. It does display a message of battery charging and in fact it is.

I thought it may be a firmware issue and installed an earlier firmware, that too made no difference.
I'm finished trying to solve the issue, the unit works, holds a charge now, and functions properly.

Normal

I may have said this before, I have three Garmin units. When plugged in, and the battery is fully charged the battery icon disappears. It will only come back on if I've had it unplugged an used the battery. Plug it in and the icon appears with the lightning bolt until it's fully charged. then it disappears.

The battery Icon should only appear when using the battery, or if the battery is actually charging.

Thanks For The Response

As I stated, my nephew's Nuvi 750 does not display this behavior. Even at 50% battery strength when charging, the battery icon disappears, however, it is charging with the message "charging battery" displayed. The fact is, it has charged. After a period of time, when I removed the Nuvi from the charger it shows 100%.

I hope somebody with a Nuvi 750 (only) can respond and comment on how their 750 works.

Any will show the charging

Any will show the charging icon when into a power source.

Not exactly.

Only if they are actively charging. The battery Icon will disappear when fully charged.

Does it work now?

Does it work now?

Yes

It always worked but the battery was bad and wouldn't hold a charge for long. By replacing the battery it now holds a charge and functions perfectly other than the battery icon disappearing.

I am shipping the unit back to my nephew today since he is moving to the UK shortly.
