Red Light and Speed Cameras in Canada

Are the files already under Red Light cameras also include locations in Canada as well? Or is that something we can start contributing?

Red light Cameras in Canada

Hello,

I just subscribed to the site. Is there a way to get the POI files for free or even to get a trial version to test it before paying?

Active members get free access. See

To become an active member, see

Welcome to the site.

There is a Getting Started button in the upper right of this page right under POI Files. It is worthwhile visiting this page.

To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

So, using the "Getting Started" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.

Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Beginner Education FAQs.

The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup)

Let us know how we can help you enjoy your GPS.

Thank you

If you "Ctrl-click" on your name in the header of any post, you will be taken to a new page which will give you information about your progress toward active membership as well as other information.

Since you did a "ctrl-click", you can simply "X" out of that page to get back to the thread you were on.

Nothing against Canada

Nothing against Canada but don't understand why the RLC and Speed Cameras files include US and Canada. Why not have seperate POIs. First thing I do is delete Canada sites (solely to keep the file smaller and since I don't go to Canada) - again nothing against our friends to the North - just a sugestion.

The quick answer is it's twice as much work for Angela. She has one database presently for all cameras. To do two files she would either have to have a separate Canadian file or, like you strip the file of the undesired locations. Including the Canadian locations doesn't require that much additional space on your unit and POI Loader is fast enough you wouldn't notice any difference in the amount of time it takes to generate the GPI file.

Maybe

Good point and noboby wants to create work for Angela. Not sure it means more work - but a consideration.

Interesting, but I think "weeks" are a function of when you signed up.

Maybe Globe Turtle will enlighten us.

I try to visit friends in Canada whenever I can so combined files are valuable to me in that regard.

However, one might look at the combined file from those in either country who live near the border. There are many that cross the border every day for one reason or another.

The difference is size is very small - all things considered.

If someone is really hurting for space, then there are other ways that space saving can be accomplished without having to break apart various POI files.

Correct

I must have glossed over that reply (or maybe it was because I slept in between yesterday and today.)

The system shows hossamadel has 2 weeks and 1 day.

As for separating the files, Box Car's quick answer is fairly accurate. While the additional work is a factor, I use a specialized tool to manage the camera files and altering it would require additional programming. Right now JM's programming focus is on a couple of major projects including combating an increasing influx of spam bots.

We do appreciate the feedback and will keep these comments under consideration when making future changes to the website.

A question

I've seen the Factory links like this that take me to a specific reply (the "#comment-345121" bit).

I've always been meaning to ask: how is this done? Not only can't a find a way to do it automagically but I wouldn't even know how I'd determine the 345121 number to add it manually.

I'm prepared to be shamed if it's simple--or if it's been discussed before... redface

CraigW ... click on "Reply" for any post, then look at the URL. You will see the post number following the thread number. (eg. .../comment/reply/41114/345213)

There may be another way to do this, but it is one way I discovered. My problem is I never remember how to construct the URL to make a direct link to the post.

The trick is to get the first part correct.

If you looked at this post in "Recent Posts", the URL is
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41418

As Craig says, in the post you want to reference, click on either "Reply" or "Quote" to get the comment number which is this case looked like

http://www.poi-factory.com/comment/reply/41418/345121

Knowing the comment number, add
#comment-345121
to
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41418

getting
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41418#comment-345121

and you have the correct form, most of the time.

Sometimes on page 2 of a thread, I can't get it to work correctly.

well

hossamadel wrote:

You have to look for a camera. They are normally on poles (engineers call them standards) near an intersection and then you click on http://www.poi-factory.com/node/455.

Make sure it is really a red light camera

If I may add, you want to make sure it is really a red light camera. There are all sorts of traffic control cameras that do not issue tickets that should not be reported. There are pictures and other helpful links at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6709
