Putting NA maps on nevi 255t

I have an 855 with current North American maps. I also have a Garmin nuvi 255T we bought in Germany. I have deleted all the gmappprom.gma .img .unl and .sum files from the 255 and copied in these same files from the 855. When I try to put in the gmapp;prom.img and .unl files it tells me The item “gmapsupp.img” can’t be copied because there isn’t enough free space and the same for the .unl fil. I have deleted a lot of the files from the 255t to try to make room.

Does anyone know if the capacity of the 255t is that much smaller than the 855?

Is there another way to put the North American maps in the 255T without having to pay Garmin since I paid for a lifetime update with my 855?

Can I try to delete all the files from the 255 and then copy all the files from the 855 to the 255?

Would it work to put a micro SD card in the 255 and copy the files to it?

Any help is appreciated.

Won't work

What you are trying to do won't work because Garmin's City Navigator maps are locked to a single device. If you copy them to another device they won't unlock.

One map, one device

To add to what was already said, I hope you backed up the 255's map files and didn't permanently delete them. Otherwise, the device will be of limited use since it only has the basemap.

Why Backups Are So Important.

It does sound like you permanently deleted the map files from the 255 and replaced them from the 855.
Hopefully I am mistaken.

Since more then likely you did not back them up, you no longer will have a properly functioning unit.
The base map (gmapbmap.img) will not permit you to enter locations.

The only way to get it functioning again is to remove the copied files from the 855 from the 255, then purchase a new map to install on the 255.
Economically speaking, buying a new map may not make sense, buying a new inexpensive unit with Lifetime Map updates may be wiser.

Backing up

Yes, I did back up the maps so I can remove the 855 files and restore those from the 255.

Thanks for your help everyone.

Good job

on having the foresight to make a backup.

If you would like a free (legal) USA map on your 255, you could try the Open Street Maps: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Downloa.... You can install the OSM USA map on a SD card and leave the Europe maps installed in the nuvi's internal memory.

That's Great

I'm certainly happy to hear you did have a backup, I was quite sure you didn't.
As allanb suggested, if you want a free more current map for the 255 you can get them at either link provided in the first thread of the Garmin forum named " Free Routable Maps For Garmin". Read some of the threads, quite informative.

I echo alndb's suggestion to leave the Euro map on the 255 and put the open street map on the SD card.
The open street maps are considerably larger than the City Navigator maps.

Limited Address Support?

The Openstreetmap maps however have limited address support compared to Navteq or TeleAtlas. They can route to an intersection and that's about it.
