Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? – September 2013

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.).

Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

Yellowstone & Grand Tetons

My old buddy, that is, my old Garmin GPS, was very helpful last week when we took a car trip from Bozeman, MT into Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. As we were leaving the first snow of the year covered the upper reaches of the Tetons.

Canaan Valley Resort

Ran from Zelienople to Canaan Valley last Sunday for an overnight work trip. Beautiful as ever in the valley. When I crossed the last mountain into the valley I was a little surprised, 1/3 of all the trees have already changed colors in the valley

Another Yellowstone...

trip, last Thursday through yesterday, including a (nervous) drive along the Beartooth Highway, from Cooke City on my way out for a flight from Billings. The pass was closed Tuesday at 6PM, I was driving through at 5:15PM.

Scenery at the Park was spectacular as usual, elk galore at Mammoth, caught a napping black bear across a ravine near the petrified tree, geysers in full feature at the Upper Geyser Basin. Took the old one way road to Gardiner, a spectacular drive in the late afternoon where you are on a ridge. It is the original stagecoach route from Mammoth to Gardiner.

My trusty 660 was in great form, and guided me everywhere, even recording 524MPH on the flight!

Can't wait for next time, again. . .

My trip was to Myrtle Beach and we had a good one. Weather was great.

Misdirected

Got a call from my son who was having car problems 2 hours from home, in Carlisle, PA. Jumped in the truck and entered the address in my Garmin, which directed me up the same route that Google Maps had picked. About half way there, I was desperate for a restroom, and a few quick taps on Garmin for the nearest McDonalds directed me off Rt. 15 and down a narrow, winding road. Only 2.5 more miles. What's this? Temporary stop signs in the middle of the road and police directing traffic? OMG! Battlefield entrances! Three areas of backups! Gotta go, gotta go! What? the GPS is telling me to turn into one of the battlefield parking lots? This can't be right. OH! There's a traffic light ahead. Maybe I can find a restaurant and some relief. Where did all this traffic come from? Jeeze, Louise, it's a flea market in downtown Gettysburg! Traffic is hardly moving! Patience, please, I'll get there. OH! Here's a gas station. Run in, out of order sign on the restroom. Yeah, really, this town is mobbed and the restroom is out of order. Back into the bumper to bumper traffic. Creeping along, if I can just get to that traffic circle, Garmin says I can get out of town. Finally, moving, heading back towards Rt. 15. And there's another McDonald's, a half a mile off of Rt. 15. Lost a half hour because there is no way to know if the McD's I'm looking for is easy access to the route I'm on.

San Jose to Saint Helena

Wine country is lovely this time of year. I was there on business though. Saved about 45 minutes bypassing traffic on the way home.
