Clive Iowa shuts down RLC

What started out in Clive was them trying to negotiate a new contract with the vendor has turned into shutting the cameras off.
When and if they are turned back on is in the future.

RLC

We could only hope that Chicago would try to do the same thing. Not really keeping my hopes up!!

Cameras in Clive

As of this morning the red light cameras are turned on. With a 3 to 2 vote the Clive City Council agreed to a new contract with the provider to keep the cameras operating until the summer of 2014 when they shall be taken down. The income from the fines were/are used to pay wages and upkeep of the EMT department.

No surprise....

It's all about the revenue.

And...

Yes, the revenue gained by enforcing traffic laws. Isn't there a fine if an officer gives a ticket for running a red light? Isn't that all about the revenue too?

with human intervention comes discretion.

Discretion ?

Governor Braindead's car gets caught doing 84 mph in a 65mph zone and the police officer who reported it gets fired for being "disrespectful of a police chief" after that. I think the word discretion is over used.

I approve!

I approve of that! Our city's fines for certain traffic violations are also directed to the fire department (which handles EMS as well). As with all traffic enforcement, it is a balance of revenue and safety, and the hope is that you hit an equilibrium point where the revenue covers the cost of providing safety. Ideally, safety is 100% and we don't have to every roll the fire trucks, but obviously that can't happen. But it costs us about $2000 per traffic accident response, so why not let the people who are not following the rules pay for some of it!

Increase In Crashes By Tailgaters

The DSM Register this morning ran an article that crashes at Clive's red light cameras have doubled since being put up in 2008. Crashes in the city have decreased overall in the city from 330 in 2008 to 244 in 2012.
Buried in this reporters story was that traffic has increased on that road from 10,300 average per day to 23,300 cars per day in 2012.
The fine for running a red light is $100 and under the original contract Redflex received $56.50 of that but under the new contract gets only $31.50.
This report was given to the Clive City Council by the National Motorists Association which opposes red light cameras.

After 2014

Sadly, I am guessing that they will find a way to keep them up after the summer of 2014 since they are so dependent on the money they take from motorists.

It's a slipery slope for

It's a slipery slope for jurisdictions that can't balance their budgets without camera revenue.

This won't solve their problems because they can't bring themselves to cut spending, as they should.

That's the case with many jurisdictions. What needs to happen is that the electorate tells the politicians, in no uncertain terms, stop ticketing me to balance your budgets!!!

Fred

Except...

I would rather they keep ticketing the law breakers rather than raise taxes or cut essential services.

Agreed

I'm not sure what the posted above you was getting at, but isn't that what fines do? Help support the city budget? Sure their primary purpose is to act as a deterrent, but a nice side effect is that they help support the city budget and allow for better police equipment/more officers/etc.

And I would also agree that I'd rather have the law breakers pay more money than EVERYONE having to pay more in the way of taxes.

Will show in this afternoons camera update
