Nuvi 660 - Deleted the gmapprom.img file and now cant see device

Hi, I deleted the gmapprom.img file from my garm nuvi 660 to make more space for an update but now it wont go beyond loading maps. If not powered it dies right after loading maps comes on. If powered it keeps hanging in there at Loading maps. I had copied the files from the nuvi when it was still recognized as a drive on my mac. I used the GarminDevice.xml file to an SD card and then used Garmin Express to update the SD card with the latest maps. I renamed them as *supp.img files and was hoping it would be picked up - according to a post here. I think it would have expect that I deleted the gmapprom img file ...

Any way to get back the nuvi to load fully at this point?

Thanks
Krams

Preboot and Cure.

There is a method to recover a nuvi like yours that won't go into mass storage mode. It is a fairly complex process and AFAIK cannot be done using a Mac (requires a PC). Here is a thread where it was discussed: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/38905.

There is another forum, GPSPassion, that gets into this a lot more than we normally do here at POI Factory. You may get more detailed help on that forum. If you do some Googling you will find it.

@Krams,

You say

Quote:

I used the GarminDevice.xml file to an SD card

and I hope you meant "moved". Garmin needs to find a GarminDevice.xml file on any "device" (be it a GPS unit or a SD card) for it to think that it had found a "unit" it can update.

I suspect that the GPS itself need to find the GarminDevice.xml file to know what to do.

GarminDevice.xml

@jgermann:
It is my understanding that GarminDevice.xml is an output file that is created each time you boot up the device, just like Current.gpx. So I don't think this file is required by the nuvi itself to boot up properly. In fact I have read about cases in other forums where Garmin support will have you delete the GarminDevice.xml and reboot to force a clean copy of the file to be created.

Garmin computer software like GarminMapUpdater uses the GarminDevice.xml file to identify your device, its components and software versions. That is why cloning works for map updates.

I

I believe that is correct, no GarminDevice.xml needed for a sucessful boot.

Thanks. I looked up and found this thread on the site you mentioned -> http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=143809. I will give it a try and let this thread know how it went.

The only file missing from the nuvi is the gmapprom.img file (it was 1.5+ GB so I deleted it after copying it to my hard drive on the mac). Other files are all in there. So If I can see it and copy the original file back to it I think it will work.
I am going to try the "cure".

Gmapprom.img

If you delete the Gmapprom.img it mean that you deleted the main map from your gps that is why your gsp keeping on loading and loading a map that is not there. the only solution that I have is this,unless you are willing to call garmin and ask them to let you download the all files again.In this case garmin it will take to a web site after reformat your unit it will bring your gps in the same status as it was when it was new.

For what I uderstand you also have a map on the SD card. This is what you should do.

The map on the sd card make a back up copy first on your pc.

Then copy the map from the sd card to your gps ,be sure you named gmapprom.img.

on the SD card the map must be name gmapsupp.img
and not just supp as you wrote.

If the map does not show on your SD card just rename and remove the .img just name as gmapsupp

and it should show it on you sd card.

Keep in mind also

Map on the Gps the name must be Gmapprom.img

Map on SD card................. Gmapsupp.(or+img)
