Does Garmin ever update their pre-loaded POI's?

Is the POI's updated whenever you download the latest software/map updates or are just stuck with the factory setting pre-loaded POI's forever?

>

What poi's?
I've only seen 3 and those are the garmin headquarters.

.

Pre-loaded Garmin POIs are a database contained within the actual mapset. When the maps are updated, the POIs are updated as well. In reality, it's anyone's guess if the map-embedded POIs have been updated/added or removed. I really doubt that even Garmin keeps track of this since the POIs are in the tens of millions (according to Garmin).

Those are Favorites/Saved Places. There are a few million built in POIs that are part of the map data.

Yes they do

consider this blurb from Garmin on the 2597LMT

Quote:

nüvi 2797LMT arrives with a bright 7.0" display and loaded with detailed maps of North America. With free lifetime¹ map updates, your routes are sure to reflect the most up-to-date maps, POIs (points of interest) and navigation information. New maps are available for download with no fees.

they claim to update maps POIs and navigation info (I assume this would include junction view) with each iteration.

I Doubt It

I have seen so many wrong POI's I doubt they update them. I am not even sure what the process would be to update them and it is probably complicated enough to not make it worth it.

I doubt it too.

Re: Aardvark.

Around here there are MANY businesses that have been here for several years at least that are not in Garmin.

Around here

Yes they do. Several restaurants in my town have changed names, some more than once. Garmin does a great job of keeping up. Other nearby towns: Not so good.

Mapsource

An easy way to test to see if changes are made is to keep all or at least several older City Navigator maps installed on your computer. Using Mapsource (or I expect, Basecamp), set your map to Most Detail, then zoom in to a location in your city with several businesses and check to see what built-in POIs are shown with the latest map. Now switch to older versions of City Navigator and see how things change.

A few years ago, someone asked here if a strip mall had updated the POIs to include some particular business. In doing my above test, I was able to report back to the person that the desired shop did now appear and that many others had been added and some removed over time.

I agree with those who say that the built-in POIs will never be really up-to-date, but for sure, changes are made to POIs just as roadways, speed limits, etc. are updated with each map update.

Garmin buys POI data from multiple vendors... and if their vendors update data, they show up in maps.

How would one delete built-in POIs (if that is one of the items you say you are deleting)?

No no, can't delete them, I just don't pay much attention to them. Nearest Restaurant seems to point me to MacDonalds or some Chinese place...lol. I take diesel so i have diesel gas station poi's. It's all the other text, and language stuff and so on I delete.

Very slow to change any

Very slow to change any POIs. Some restaurants have been closed more than 2 years near me and are still included in the most recent map.

I agree

I don't think they make any changes once they are programmed to a map.

It's hard to keep up

Millions Business come and gone everyday, it is hard for anyone to keep up.

Very behind, hard to keep up

It is very behind, as it is hard to keep up to date.

When in doubt, a smart phone to get a current address works wonders. I still very much prefer a standalone GPS unit over a smartphone in the role of navigation, but the smart phone does work better for some things.

.

One of those hit n miss updates.

All the more reason that Garmin should allow the Smartphone link to work with some of their slightly older units to compensate for the gaps in the POI database.

Updated POIs

POI Factory is the only place that has the newest, up-to-date POIs. Forget the rest, just come here.

Wondering the same

I was wondering the same also. Seems to me that they should update their POI's.

Not possible

To keep track of all places would be one big database.
For example HOOTERS in Des Moines closed this month but is still in the Garmin.
Since I have no smart phone I do not know if it has been removed or is still there.
Businesses do change and one has to almost keep a daily record of them.

Expecting too much

To pay a couple of hundred dollars for an electronic device and expect it to be updated every quarter with every opening and closings of those establishments which were chosen (or asked) to be part of the built in POIs seems to me to be unreasonable.

Garmin gets the data from Navteq and Navteq collects the data from multiple sources. When an establishment goes belly up, one of the last things they might think of doing would be to inform Navteq that they were out of business.

One of the reasons the POI files at POI factory are kept up to date is because our members WANT to report changes and do so.

poi is new with maps updates

poi is new with maps updates

If you're referring to the one located at 1480 22nd Street, Google has indeed already updated the maps to show that it's permanently closed.

So Agree

"POI Factory is the only place that has the newest, up-to-date POIs. Forget the rest, just come here."

Agree 110%

Crowdsourcing

One of the reasons the POI files at POI factory are kept up to date is because our members WANT to report changes and do so.

Garmin should take a cue from POI Factory and adopt the "crowdsourcing" approach to keeping their data up to date. Maybe offer a reward system with points towards Garmin gear to folks who report incorrect data that can be verified and appoint regional administrators to handle different portions of the map. If done correctly it could go a long way towards keeping things current.

Garmin gets their preloaded POI database from Navteq...

who updates their POI database on a regular basis, so yes, Garmin's pre-loaded POI database is updated every map update. Navteq (Nokia) has actually done a fairly decent job of keeping up in my area. But if you live in a relatively rural area, you won't really notice many changes if any from update to update.
