Garmin poi loader and red light cameras

Is there an ideal setting when installing red light cameras? For example, should I use the express setting (in garmin poi loader) or should I set the feet alerts myself, and if I do set it myself, what settings feet number should I use? Thanks, anyone?

Your choice

It'll be interesting to see the views of others, but for me, I just accept the default settings and get adequate advance notice.

I do the same. No

I do the same. No problem.

I do the same but if the intersections were closer together in my area, I'd probably adjust the settings lower. It's nice to have the ability to customize this setting. BTW, you can set any POI to use this feature. There is a checkbox in POI Loader to allow this. Great for that Breweries POI when you want to be sure to hit those in your area or travels! smile

Default Setting

So how far or what is the default setting?

OK I read the "Garmin poi

OK I read the "Garmin poi loader and red light cameras" page and I just wanted to see if I understand...

When I run Garmin POI Loader it will combine both the red light and speed camera files?

Also, if I don't want to use the red light/speed camera poi's anymore, can I turn them off from my GPS, or do I have to delete them using the Garmin POI Loader?

Thanks!

Let me try to explain

The red light and speed cameras are two separate poi files. When you run poi loader those 2 files get combined in to 1 .gpi file.

To further explain, you can have say 10 food (restaurants) poi files. They can be combined into 1 gpi file called Restaurants.

You can't just "turn off" the red light and speed cameras unless you turn the volume down or mute the sound. You have to remove the gpi file either through poi loader or hooking the gps to the computer and going in to the poi folder and deleteing the gpi file.

My Experience

I originally set the distance for RLC alerts to 500 ft. with POI Loader but found that was too close.
Set the alert to 750 ft and that appears just about right for most areas and speed limits 50 mph and below.

The following is for Custom POIs (those downloaded from POI Factory, for instance) and not the Garmin Safety Camera database (Cyclops).

From the settings I see when using POI Loader in manual mode, I believe they're:

redlight: 1320 ft

speed: 1969 ft

I also think that speed alerts sound only when you're exceeding the speed limit. Correct me if I'm wrong, folks.

My Suggestion

You can create two separate files for Speed & Redlight cameras using POI loader.
Put the 3 files for Speed into a folder on your PC, then take the 3 Redlight files and put them in a different folder.
Now run POI loader for each folder one at a time naming them Speed Cameras and Redlight Cameras respectively, This will give you two separate .GPI files.

As pwohrlab indicated, you CAN”T just turn off the speed & redlight cameras, it’s all POI’s or nothing.
There is a solution though, but may be inconvenient. You can copy the redlight and speed camera .gpi files to an SD card after creating a Garmin\POI folder and copying them to that folder. When you re-boot the Nuvi it will find the POI’s and ask if you want to add them to your Nuvi, answer NO. The Nuvi will read them off the SD card. If you don’t want them to appear, just don’t insert the SD card. It’s still annoying since the next time you want to use them and insert the SD card it once again will ask you if you want to add the files to the Nuvi.

Red Light camera distance Depends on your area

If you are out in the country with long distances between red light cameras and high speed limits, the default 1320 feet makes sense. Use POI Loader with the automatic setting.

On the other hand, in downtown Manhattan or Chicago, the intersections with cameras can be very close together where there are low speed limits. 600 feet seems about right for me since the next intersection can be about 700 feet away. This avoids confusion about which intersection really has a camera. I use POI Loader with the manual setting.

All red light POIs in your nuvi must have the same distance for the redlight proximity alert, so your choice must be a compromise depending on where you do most of your driving.

I am using the default

I have been using the default values. Here on Long Island, with a few exceptions like Hicksville, NY where some a closely spaced together (ran into THAT mess again this past Thursday), the lights are spread far enough apart that they do not go off as a continuous stream of alerts.

Thanks!

Thank you for the info!

I use the default for Red Light cameras, but ...

... I change the distance to 12000 feet, about 2 miles, for the Speed cameras.

Dobs108 is right

The distance you set will vary depending on the general area you'll be driving (NYC versus West Virgina).

I set the RLC file to 1/4 km (820 feet) & double that for the speed camera.

I just loaded the RLC files onto my microSD card this afternoon. I made 2 custom and 1 default microSD cards to try out to save time and money from driving home. I tested the cards and find that the default distances were a bit far. I used canuk's settings of 250m for RLC and 500m for SP cameras and it seems to work for me. Thanks canuk.

RLC and SPC poi distances

What I do is, 300 meters for rcl, 600 meters for spc (speed Cams)this way you can be prepared for city and open road.

good thinking

A real good idea, indeed.

I left it as default and right now when I'm driving down a parallel street I get the warning. Or I get the warning an intersection too early if I'm on that street! I think getting a distinct icon would fix the issue so I'm not sure which I'm gonna go with yet as a fix.

I Left the default .too But??

I have left the default too on the Speed Camera and The Redlight camera and they seems to work just fine.
using the POI loader.

I have try several times to do the copy and paste too and they have work for me too but this only have work for me for the Redlight and Speed Camera, including the Voice sound and the Icons.

But when it come about the Rest Area I notice that If I Install them with the Default using the poi loader they never work for me. So now I know and I use the Custom mode set the distance to 6000 Feet and they work great.

Also the copy and paste on the Rest area does not work.so do not do it.

Please explain what you mean by copy and paste.

The Rest area file can not be installed as a default setting if you want an alert. Also if by copy and paste you mean you are copying the new file over the old file, then that won't work if you are usining alerts. You must rename the file and the alerts to be the same. The file has version numbers (letters) to it to show its an updated file.

TourGuide?

WuLabsWuTecH wrote:

The only way I can see a redlight alert on a parallel street is by renaming the redlight csv file to be a TourGuide. Is that what you've done?

And when you say you also get alerts too early when the redlight location is on your street, what alert distance are you using?

For many of us here, we just use The Factory's speed and redlight camera files as they were created--not tinkering with alert distances, renamed files, etc. Your results are not at all normal.

Alerts

I use 1500 feet seems to work for me especially in NY.
Speed camera I'm set at 2000ft but haven't come across one in my travels.

Info

Thanks for the info guys. I think I going to have many SD cards. One for the hi-ways and one for city.

Speed cameras I leave at the default. Red light cameras I set to 528 feet. Rest areas are at 1 mile if in the US, 3280 feet (@1km) for Canada.
