Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? – July 2013

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.).

Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is only difficult for the others. It is the same when you are stupid.

Oklahoma

Just got back from Oklahoma for business and relatives. First trip with our new RV and enjoyed the trip. Wish we could have gone a month earlier due to heat down there. We stayed in several RV parks and met some interesting and friendly folks.

GPS definitely enhances RVing.

Camping in Smoky Mountains

Camped 3 days at Elkmont Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains NP last week. It rained every day but we still had a great time.

Great Chicago trip

Just had a great weekend in Chicago where we depended on the Garmin and it performed like a champ! I was especially impressed with two subtle details:

1) I haven't driven around downtown Chicago for a long time, but the Garmin effectively steered us on and off the Express Lanes on I-294 which saved us time & traffic.

2) I was puzzled at one point why the lane guidance only selected the rightmost of many possible lanes for a point where I-90 and I-290 split. It made sense soon enough though, when I discovered it was because I had an exit right less than a half a mile after the split. Very cool!

Love my 50LM and we have two more driving trips coming up soon. Can't wait to hit the road again!

A motorcycle ride to...

Copper River and then Valdez. Lovin' the summer in Alaska!

Off Roading

I have created some POI's for going off-road (Utah, Arizona, CO., WY., NV, and Calif). I am testing them now and should be available within a month or so.

Baseball and Fireworks

Caught a ball game and fireworks afterwards on the 4th. Good weather, no traffic issues going, but some near misses on the road after the game from folks confused over the traffic patterns.

Trip from Eagle River to Fairbanks...

to camp over the 4th of July weekend. Then headed down the Richardson to Glennallen and then back home. Nice to have time of arrival from GPS!

Old Soldiers Reunion in Bemidji, Mn

Drove from Austin, Texas to Bemidji, MN. Took the shortcut through Nashville, TN on the way out, and another shortcut through Yellowstone NP on the way back. This allowed me to visit all 4 of my sons and see my buddies, who have all aged considerably during the last 44 years.

There were occasional problems with speed limits not being correct. Most US highways in Texas are now rated to 75 MPH, no longer 70. (There are exceptions.) As we have all learned it is our responsibility to see those changes, not Garmins.

My recently purchased Nuvi 2595 worked fine, but the voice command is still a work in progress for me. Very frustrating. Waypoint symbols are all converted to blue flags. When I save my trackpoints at the end of the day, I lose all my symbols. Am I the only one missing these icons?

Newest version of Base Camp has much better route planning. Still a bit of a learning curve for me. You can create a multi-day trip, with timed rest stops, gas fill ups, etc. It doesn't have the suggested places to stop for gas like Street Atlas.

Mapsource keeps crashing on all of my computers. This crashing seems to be Garmin's way of migrating us old guys to the new product. I don't know what was so wrong with Mapsource. I still use it to save my daily track logs.

Total trip, 5500 miles, 11 States, 18 days. When I was young and strong I had work to do and couldn't get away. Now that I am an old guy, I am certainly not as strong but I have the time to see the places I've always wanted to see. I am more capable of stopping to smell the roses. And water them.

Philadelphia PA

Went shopping at Reading Market.

San Jose to Point Reyes

Beautiful daytrip from San Jose to see the Pacific Ocean and the lovely lighthouse.

After reading your post, I experimented with Mapsource some more. I could not get it to crash, even with 200 waypoints and several routes. Since the 2014.10 update, I have had no crashes...
That was a great trip. Were your trip logs saved in the Archive folder? And how many miles before the log is sent to archive on your 2595?

trip with 2014 map

I left on june 14 came back on july 5th dorve from Washington to Bisbee ariz with stops at reno las vegas Williams ariz Jerome ariz grand canyon tombstone chandler Montezuma's castle all in all about 3500 miles the garmin wasn't to bad but a couple of times I wanted to throw it out the window lol. it seemed to get lost if you went off the route for lunch spent 20 min or more in ely Nevada going down dead end streets, and I really liked las vegas traffic "take a left here then turn right in that traffic, cross lanes yea right arrrg. then on the return coming back from tombstone we ran into a monsoon and couldn't see out of the windshield it was coming down so hard. then when we get out of it we run into a dust storm. now im at home resting and taking a real vacation lol

tried to beat traffic home

We left our campground around 8 am on Sunday morning in hopes of beating the traffic home. No such luck, as we drove past the sign "Left lane closed 1 mile ahead". No warning from my Garmin (2595). Jumped off the interstate just before the backup and took a detour for a couple of miles, then back on the interstate. Felt smug having avoided the backup, until many miles down the road I passed a vehicle that I was certain that I had passed before the backup. Guess I should have had the patience to roll through the traffic jam.

Charlotte

Went to Charlotte, NC and back to visit a friend.

Good Holiday Weekend

Spent the 4th on a hill above the valley and was able to see the city firework shows for several towns. My dog also preferred the little hike up there and being above what to him felt like a war zone in our neighborhood.

Drove into the Mountains and did some whitewater rafting, only my knee's and part of me feet got sunburned.

Drove my nieces to camp yesterday.
I did have to correct Garmin on that trip, but part of that was letting my mom attempt to set our destination without my assistance. razz

First time using nuvi 40LM

Last week I picked up a nuvi 40LM, it happened to be my daughter's birthday. Got the gps fired up and used it out of the box to find the Machine Shed restaurant that we had never been to. We are somewhat familiar with the area it is located so had an idea where it was. It was interesting to follow its shortest route while getting acquainted with the features.
Will be using it for a road trip to Yellowstone and points between. Currently working on loading the Redbox locations for dvd for the trip.
This looks like a helpful group of people here. smile

Mapsource

I manually download (transfer from device), usually at the end of each driving day. After the transfer I write a log of where I've been and what I've seen .

I am not familiar with any feature that archives automatically. I have the default directory for saving data set to that directory I've always used.

I have not seen a pattern to the crashes. If I do, I'll let you know.

Going Up

Heading off to the cooler temperatures of the Sierra Mountains. Bodie, CA ghost town is at 8379 ft. High temperature today is 77, low of 40. Sounds nice.

MD

From Maryland to GA by road.

MD to FL

Did a round trip from MD to Tampa, Ft Meyers, and back in the truck camper. Rained most of the whole trip, but I enjoyed the cool rather than the summer FL sun/heat.

Took both my 765T as well as my tablet with CoPilot on it and again used the tablet more than the Garmin. Need to get my windmill back so I can try the speed and redlight files with CoPilot before I retire my Garmins.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Balmer and Back

Drove up to Balmer (well, actually Dundalk) and back. Garmin worked great, except for one road recommended that I know is a bad choice. Even warned correctly of road repair work.

P.S. For "foreigners" Balmer is Baltimore.
