Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? – June 2013

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.)

Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

Today is a gift, that's why they call it the present...

Does anyone know..?

This is question about GPS routing, If you have two nuvi GPS, one is recent and the other one is 7 years old. Both GPS are updated with the latest maps, my question is, if you plan a trip, would the established route be identical, providing that all settings and route preferences are same on both..?

I am curious to know. Have a great Monday everyone.

I believe that the firmware is not identical in all models, therefore, the algorithms are not necessarily the same.

I too am curious if anyone knows for sure ...

Looking for a Church

I went looking for a church that was founded by a family forefather. I would not have found the road if not for the GPS. The road was paved but not wide enough for a center line.

On The Bus Again

One week into trip from GA in our VW Vanagon camper bus.

Rallied with 170 some other buses, camping in a fairground in Almonte, Ontario, and now driveway camping with friends in the area.

Planning to be out until the end of July.

came back yesterday from a 3 day trip to north texas. traveling with a gps still amazes after years and years of use. I traveled a long time with paper maps in the 1970s-1990s before GPS. Wonder how I managed -lol.

Los Angeles

Took a trip from DSM to LA to Phoenix to DSM.
To try to answer a question previously asked, I used both of my GPS units, one built in the dash and a Nuvi 1490.
I set them up for the same destinations and the quickest time they both at times went separate ways. One consistent thing was that they preferred the interstates over two lane roads even if the highway was shorter and almost just as fast speed limit.
First example was from Tucumcari NM to Kansas City MO both wanted to take I 40 to Oklahoma and then up I35 to I 70 to KC. The fastest way is to take highway 52/400 to Wichita and then join I35 and follow it to KC. It is basically a question about right angle sides lengths. Both tried to turn me around and take the interstate.

NYC

Don't need a Garmin here since I'm walking or taking Taxis....

POI's are Great

I loaded my Nuvi with a lot of off-road waypoints that I got from a book. I converted the waypoints to DD and loaded them into my Nuvi 1650LMT and took off into the off-roads in my Jeep. They worked great. Love GPS's

Flor-i-duh > Maine > Flor-i-duh
25 day trip - 4536 miles total
Used 160.4 gallons of gas
Average mpg including all local traveling 28.3 mpg
Average cost of fuel for the trip $3.425/gal
"Jack" did very well - got a bit confused on some real back roads in Maine but he got me out !
Checked out 6 of my recommended Lobster Shacks in NH & ME and found that they were still worthy to be included in the POI file.
Now to unpack, wash clothes and rest up !
Where to next ??????????????????????????

TomTom built in and Garmin Nuvi 1490T. Eastern Iowa, formerly Southern California "You can check out any time you like...but you can never leave."

Shawnee National Forest

Took a road trip through and around Shawnee National Forest in southern IL. Very remote and undeveloped with lots of county and barely-marked roads. POI's for some trailheads and other areas often involved getting coordinates from a visual inspection in Google Earth based on a description like "small gravel pull-off big enough for two cars, a mile from the junction" and entering that in the Nuvi. At that point the Nuvi would get shut off and the eTrex would take over.
