Use 1450LMT With No Maps On Internal Storage

I just got a micro sd card for my Garmin 1450LMT. I am going to put the 2014.10 map on it when it comes out here. I read that if no maps are found on the internal storage, newer models will check the SD card, but older models will brick, requiring servise by Garmin.

Is the 1450LMT one of those "old models"? Can I use it with no maps on the internal storage? Please don't tell me its safe unless you're pretty sure. I don't want to brick my GPS, because I can not afford replacement/repair right now.

Your 1450 will do a SD-map update

This Garmin link will answer many of your questions:

With a 4GB SD card in your device, the next 2014.10 map update will let you know that the full map update won't fit on your 1450 and will let you install 2014.10 directly to the nuvi's SD card. Just remember that City Navigator then is on the SD card and for all practical purposes, is a integral part of your nuvi.

Even if the new 2014.10 is on the SD card and the card removed, your nuvi should still have its Basemap to display and use. The Basemap is not routable, only shows major roadways, has no built-in POIs, etc. but is there for you.

Although you didn't ask, the 1450 will be given a small Junction View file with each City Navigator map update. We all hope that Garmin will continue to offer the "large JCV file" for many many more and better quality Junction Views. If interested, follow the Garmin forum in the days/weeks after 2014.10 becomes available to learn how to get and install the large jcv file in your 1450 to be used instead of the tiny one auto-installed by Garmin during your map update. It's highly recommended for the older units like your 1450 and my 855 that offer Junction view but get a small file from Garmin during map updates.

No Internal Map

Craig is correct. Without an internal map, the unit will still boot with the base map but will not be usable for navigation as the POI's are in the missing map file.

You will also see a (C) symbol in the center bottom of the screen after the "Loading Maps" text, telling you that the internal map is missing, locked or invalid. If the map is on an SD card, the unit will boot normally just as if the map was internally on the unit.

The unit shouldn't brick itself because of hardware. It is the firmware that determines what happens when a map file is present or not. This might have been an issue on very old firmware with poor error handling.

Another reason to keep the firmware updated.
