MD Beige Speed Cameras

Are showing up around town. At first I thought they were portable but noticed the are mounted on cement slabs.
I tried installing their locations on the latest list and it doesn't work. First I used the "where Am I" function on my GPS while sitting in my car right next to one. That's in Degrees.Minutes,Seconds. I then tried the web site
http://www.itouchmap.com/latlong.html and letting it round off the last numbers. What am I doing wrong? Also I was told by Angela that portable units are not listed because people do not want to be alerted if the camera has been moved. I would rather get a false alert then get a ticket.
I am not positive these new beige units, which are the size of a mail box are movable or not.

Decimal degrees

Change your nuvi's settings from degrees/minutes/seconds to decimal degrees as that's what custom POIs use.

Hmm, these look beige. Could this be what you're seeing?

Coordinates

On your nuvi, do
Where To? > coordinates > format
and change to decimals. That is the format of the poi-factory camera files.

They do look close to that

But I don't remember any air vents on the side. I am almost tempted to sit there and see if it ever flashes.
Thanks for the GPS settings. I'll get right on that.

Three locations are:
1.Walter and Moravia
2.Old Harford, two blocks from where it ends at Harford Rd. In front of a school.
3.Alameda and Ednor

Just found this: (See #77)

What could be more proof than that, as far as these devices being not for money, but for the general good of society? Fake cameras generate $0 revenue, but cost money to install, a net loss to the municipality.

Speed roulette

They may be watching you or not, the end result, people are slowing down. Well worth the cost.

Monitoring Corridors, not just specific sites

Angela and JM may want to rethink the issue in light of this article. http://www.mymcpnews.com/?p=4498

This indicates that around the Baltimore area there is a shift from random placement of portable speed cameras to enforcement along corridors. A camera may not be in every box on the corridor but there will likely be one or more cameras randomly placed in boxes along the corridor being surveiled.

We may have to start marking the beginning and end points of speed camera placements along certain roadways.

Ahhh. Very Interesting!

They may be empty, but just wait until they really are live and taking pictures. It's a good way to sucker people to give up their $$$.

Sucker?

You used "sucker" as a verb. I would use it as a noun. Anyone who travels faster than the speed limit (or faster than other cars) is a "sucker" - regardless of whether there are cameras around or not.

where

I'm just curious where you live when you make these statements, is it somewhere that there are cams, and have you fallen victim to them?

no ticket until 12 mph

Maryland allows for 11 mph over, and even a state trooper friend said 10 mph over is a good general rule (it would be rare that they take off after you for doing 75 in a 65, 80, probably).

I'll say it again, 11 mph is reasonable, 36 in a 25 will not trigger the cam, you'd have to go 37 before you even get a $40 fine. There's no question speed cams in MD are more for safety than they are for revenue.

Empty

As far as I know in the city where I live we supposedly have about 170 red light cameras. They are also apparently moved from one to another location though the external boxes remain.

There is a difference between the RLC cameras which draw more negative comments than the speed cameras. Granted there are abuses in how the cameras are operated but speed cameras do change the behavior of drivers. One stretch of road near me used to NOTE: THAT'S USED TO average at least one death a year. Since the speed cameras went up, there have been no deaths and the number of accidents has decreased significantly. So, parroting the meme "They're all about the money" is just as false as saying there are no abuses in the way the programs are run.
