Every POI can have a sound and/or icon

Several weeks ago, someone was asking for a unique sound and/or icon for every entry in a POI file. That got me to thinking how that might be done.
Not that this is something one would want to do routinely, but is it possible? The answer is yes.
The answer is .gpx.
Looking at the specifications of a "waypoint" in a .gpx, one finds that you can specify a proximity distance as well as link to .bmp and/or .wav files.
My testing has resulted in a new Tutorial proving that it is possible.
Excellently Writen
I would think creating a tourguide by this method would be a success. I'm thinking such a file could be quite large. Any idea how much compression would occur from gxp plus linked wav/bmp files to poi file.

This Is Great
I could never figure how to put a default Proximity Alert, until now.
Thanks

Nice tutorial
Last winter, I made a gpx file of the mile markers for the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys. Each individual mm number was called out as we passed by. I used the same bmp for all. Besides being fun we found it useful because the guide book marked attractions by mile marker.
Next year I will set the proximity to a larger value.

brain freeze...sigh
I would like to follow the progress of this post as well...could you please refresh my memory as to how one marks a post to follow here on poi-factory?

It's not possible in this site's operating software to get alerts when replies are posted to a thread of interest to you or otherwise to follow an individual thread of interest.
For what it's worth, this is what works for me to be able to view a manageable number of posts each time I visit without missing the ones I want to follow:
1) Make sure you're signed into the site.
2)In the upper right quarter, look for and click "unread posts." The first time you do this, there will be a gazillion unread messages.
3) After reading messages of interest to you, look to the bottom of the list of unread posts and click the "Mark all messages as read." You will be taken to a 2nd page to confirm this with a warning that this action can not be undone.
4)Now each time you visit the site, click the "unread posts" and you'll just see the threads newly created and replies to earlier threads that were created since you last visit. If you visit every 1-2 days, this list of "unread posts" is quite manageable.
5) After reading the messages you want, remember to again "mark all as read" and confirm the action so that your list of unread posts on your next visit will all be new again.
6) On each visit to the site, repeat the Unread/MarkAsRead combo to set you up for your next visit.
7)Optional: You can further limit the messages you see by "hiding" discussion groups that don't apply to you. In my case, I've hidden:
•Magellan talk
•TomTom talk
•Mac topics
my recent post
I reply to the post and check 'my recent post'
This, along with what CraigW posted helps. Be sure and delete all unread as he said when you read everything as CraigW said, this helps a lot.

One correction
...After reading messages of interest to you, look to the bottom of the list of unread posts and click the "Mark all messages as read." You will be taken to a 2nd page to confirm this with a warning that this action can not be undone...
When I wrote "Mark all messages as read" in my reply I should have written each time:
Mark topics in ALL FORUMS as read
Things I have learned about TourGuide
I created a gpx file using EPE. The file has a unique wav for each location. In this case it is every mile marker between Card Sound road and downtown Key West on the Overseas Highway, a total of 127 markers, including Zero. All locations shared the same bmp.
..I created a folder consisting of 127 bmp files with numbers 0 to 126. Loading the gpx file again, I pointed each poi to the bmp file name using the LINK feature in EPE.
..Using POI Loader an error:
"Only 32 symbol file allowed for each category. The category MMTourGuide exceeds that limit."
..I separated the file into four files. The simulation works perfectly. Selecting the appropriate zoom level, the mile marker number appears on my Nuvi, then the wave file announces that number.
...Next I tried using EPE on the large file, saving MMTourGuide.gpi into the poi folder on my Nuvi. I did not get the "32" symbol error. I did get a sox.exe error. I fixed that.
..However when running a simulation, the bmp was the same for all locations. At this point, I don't know why.
.. Using four separate files is not really a problem. We encountered this error a couple of years ago when our DINING category exceeded 32 files. That work-around was spitting the categories into DINING, FAST FOODS, PIZZA and BBQ.
