Chrysler 430N

I went to load POI's onto my Ram 2500's radio, which is the 430N. This is not a Garmin GPS, but, it does use Garmin's software. Custom POI's are supported, but, the instructions on how to do so are a bit lacking, specifically with regards to naming & POI file selection. So I'm writing this.

{moved to FAQ page, link below}

I have installed eight custom POI files this way.

I'm going to test alerts, sounds, and custom icons next. I'll update this once I do.

UConnect 8.4AN in my new Jeep (ordered)

I believe the gps component of my UConnect system is the same as the Chrysler unit you're working with. I'm glad to see the info you've provided and will be watching for additional news as you go along.

As soon as I take delivery of my Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, I'll chip in with what I am doing w/ the gps, too.

I forgot to ask you this....

Does loading new custom poi merely overwrite the previous custom poi you loaded, or does it wipe out factory-installed poi also?

--
RBF

normally 2 different things

Normally they are two different databases. Custom POI are loaded into the Extras while the factory installed are part of the map data. As long as the map is there, the factory POI will be there also.

When installing new custom POI's, it only over-writes previously installed custom POI's.

Alerts

When using the Garmin POI Loader, on the Install Mode screen, you can select Manual instead of the default Express. Once you then click the continue button, a screen is displayed where you can set up alerts.

The settings page will be displayed once per POI file in your POI directory. To enable an alert, check the box This file contains proximity alert points., the select the Alert whenever you get close to a point, and enter a distance. Click the Continue button, and repeat for each file you want proximity alerts for.

I've tested this and they work. I have alerts enabled for Low Clearance bridges, set to 10560 feet (two miles). When I get two miles away, a chime sounds, and a popup shows on the nav screen listing the POI. The popup stays on the screen until you are past the POI. Very nice.

You are supposed to be able to add custom sounds, but I have not gotten these to work (or the custom icons). Still working on that.

A Question: Do the custom poi load into the device, or

do you have to leave the usb in place? I ask because as I understand it in order to use the media function of the unit to play cd's that are placed on a usb the usb must stay connected. At least that appears to be the requirement in the UConnect 8.4AN system in 2014 Jeeps.

I'm hoping my new Jeep arrives soon, for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is to get involved with the nav system.

In my 2013 jeep I have the 430N it has a 28GB hard drive to load MP3's on, I'm guessing for the 430 the poi folder will reside on the hard drive, not sure about your 8.4AN.

As I suspected with the 430N the Poi's go on the unit itself in the "extras" folder. The USB drive does not need to remain in.

inconsistent results on Chrysler 8.4N

treaves wrote:

According to Garmin techs, the 8.4N is incapable of any sounds except the default beeps, and in my experimenting, building your poi.gpi with them included will suppress even the default beeps.

Further, on my car, (Chrysler 300) I get no notifications of approaching POIs unless I am using the Nav unit for navigation. When not navigating, I get nothing.

Oh, they also told me that 2000 POIs is the max, but I don't necessarily believe that.

worked fine

Passed by a few red light camera POI's I loaded and the alert and pop-up worked perfectly, the USB was not in at the time so the files were in fact loaded onto the hard drive in the Garmin app.

I have far more than 2000

I have far more than 2000 POI's. And even when I'm not watching the Nav screen, I still get the beeps.

funny

Funny I was just going to post that. Today, with the radio on the screen, I got the alert tone as I passed by a red light camera intersection. Of course I knew why it beeped but there was no text alert just the tone since the nav was in "hidden" mode.

Uconnect 8.4N on 2013 Chrysler 300C

Like you, I was able to load my custom Pois

I got no sound... no icon display.

The GPS unit itself is very good and is comparable to my Nuvi 3590LMT.

I hope Garmin will explain how to make the custom Pois work in the Chrysler GPS.

Traffic

Does the 430N have the traffic feature available so that the GPS will avoid traffic areas and choose faster routes?

not that I've seen

ccaquino wrote:

not that I've seen which is fine because on my Garmin 2460 the traffic features tells me "traffic ahead" after I pull into it.

Waze

That makes the traffic feature not useful at all.

Have you tried the WAZE app on a smartphone? Maybe in the future, other GPS devices will be like that.

Briefly

Briefly, didn't really like it as you have to pay to close attention to it for it to be useful and it wears the battery down pretty quick always being on. Of all the apps out there I use the camera and one game I like the most outside of using it as a ...... wait for it ..... phone. wink

You have to repeat the entire steps with both files in your input folder. You can not 'add to', you must replace.

Yes, if you pay Sirius for that, I believe it does have traffic data for routing.

New uConnect software for 430N

Version 50.00.07 is out. I put this on my system yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised to see that now my custom icons are showing!

So now, when an alert triggers, you see the location on the map with an icon, and if you create your Poi file with custom icons, those are used. Before, all you see is a small popup that is in a static location on the screen, with no idea where the POI is.

Just want to add ...

One kind of annoying difference, when the car is stopped my Garmin 2460 will stop beeping if I'm within the set distance of a POI like a RLC, the 430N keeps beeping until you pass the POI so sitting in traffic in line at a red light it can be annoying.

Adding custom vehicles

Thanks for all the info for the 430n. I have added quite a few Speed Cameras and RLCs for Edmonton Alberta area.
Of course now I want more. Anyone know how to add custom vehicles?

Any other Canucks out there? If you're interested, I have created a Canada Only RLC database and Speed Camera csv files. Can use KPH and Metres instead of converting.
BTW, most of the Speed Cameras in Edmonton are mobile so are not being used in the databases on this site but I am entering them in my database, eh.

soberbyker 430n RLC keeps beeping

There's a fix for that right on the 430n. I think it's under Settings > Proximity and in there it will offer you the option of single, continuous, or no alert. If that doesn't work I apologize, I'm not in my Jeep.

Does that apply to Extras?

I am getting a custom POI for RLC only, nothing else. What folder are your custom POIs in? Do you add them before or after you run the Update Loader?

Thanks I am aware of the setting, I like the continuous tone, I have it set in my Garmin 2460, but the difference, as I mentioned, the 2460 stops beeping when the car stops, then continues once the car starts to move again, the 430N beeps regardless. The reason for opting for continuous is some red lights tend to have a back-up meaning the light can cycle 2 or 3 times before you get to it when traffic is heavy, in the wait I don't want to forget I'm at one, not that I would but just in case, ya know what I mean.

2016 Chrysler Town & Country

I just got my new van and your instructions for adding the POIs to the 430N were very helpful. I have a windows machine and there were some slight differences using the POI Loader. I was asked for the destination of the file first and then the location of the source. Thanks.
