garmen express firmware update

i accidently shut garmen express down before i hit the finish button while installing the new firmware version 7.80. when i try to reinstall 7.80 again with garmen express it hangs up and says connect device to continue even though my nuvi 2455 lmt is connected. i then went to garmins website and tried to find updates and a "no device is located" appears when i hit find device. anyone know how to fix the mistake i made?

My Guess

Will your 2455 startup when not connected? If it will then I would uninstall Garmin Express then re-install and try again.

Let us know what happens.

garmin firmware

yes it starts up when un plugged and i will try that. i'll keep you posted. no good! garmin express no longer sees my device will not run.

garmin firmware

will doing a hard reset restore the firmware to factory data and allow express to connect to my 2455 nuvi? if not how do i get express to recognize my gps?

Hard reset

does not alter firmware, but when you are having unusual problems it is always a good idea to try a hard reset to see if that resolves the problem. I am guessing it won't in your case, but it is worth a try.

If you are using your device in MTP mode instead of storage mode, I would try to change that also after you do the hard reset.

thank you for the response. i am no longer able to see my nuvi as a removable device on my cpu therefore i can't back it up.not knowing how to solve this i think i will call garmin support tomorrow. definately have no communication with gps other than it makes an audible noise of three short thuds when plugged in.

express

It crashed multiple times when trying to install a map, but luckily in my case the 2350LMT was not harmed. I got a lame response from Garmin telling me not to use Express. They should have a statement on the website saying not to use it imho...

The drivers are missing!

http://www.gawisp.com/perry/nuvi/
Find your files on this site, you got to reload the whole thing. You wiped out the drivers. Garmin stores the files and drivers in folders.Just like Windows. So you will need reload and extract the files with Winrar or Winzip. Download the files, your exe program will ask you where would you like to extract the files to. Just navigate to what ever windows calls it , will be like drive E...Look at your"computer" from the start menu. You will see your Garmin as a drive. One is the "C" the other will be the DVD drive, and what ever the 3rd will be is your Garmin. Any files you download will do, if will be not the latest just fine, you will have to run the update anyway.Good luck...

firmware.

thanks everyone i hope i'm on the path to solving this! went into device mgr on my cpu and found a problem with the driver communication to the nuvi. i did install the new driver to no avail before i went into device mgr. good news is i had a backup! bad news it was not everything. i am now communicating to gps and can start putting it back the way it was before this glitch.

firmware

now that my nuvi 2455 lmt is functioning again i would like to know what specific files are backed up in the garmin express backup feature. operating, poi's, saved places, pic's ? i have at least a couple back ups i did manually but i have a hard time storing them orderly and not so confusing. if and when i need them they are all over! some i did. some the gps stored thru express etc.

Likely only things like favorites and routes

I do not know this for certain, but reading everything I could find on the Garmin website, it seems to me that Garmin Express (GE) is making backups of only a user's personal information.

On this site we strongly encourage everyone to make full backups of your entire GPS's files.

If you are having trouble keeping track of your backups, you might try the technique of including the full date and reason for the backup when you give the backup folder a name. I suggest you create a folder on your C: drive called MyBackups. In this folder you might have several sub-folders like MySmartPhone (hopefully you do a periodic backup of your phone - especially pictures) and MyGarmin. In the MyGarmin folder would be a sub-folder named something like "20130327 Nuvi 765 backup just before loading 201340 maps".

Hopefully, you have several external USB drives on which you periodically back up your PC. There is a free version of a product called Macrium Reflect that is recommended by a computer guru that I follow (I have one of the paid versions to get what are called "incremental backups"). Once a month/quarter, make a backup of your entire machine and then, having done so, the backup of your GPS will be in several other places. If you do that (and are concerned that your C: drive is getting too full), then you can delete from your PC's hard drive any GPS backups that are several years old (since they will be on one or more external USB drives).

If you have never lost a hard drive to a catastrophic failure, then you cannot appreciate the agony that goes with such. It just takes time and the willingness to do it, but having backups gives peace of mind.

firmware

i have a stand alone hard drive i use for backup for just my music and a few other files. the express backup has a gpx folder, poi folder, and a sq lite folder that has several various subfolders. since visiting here i have at least two full backups. one is pretty much bare bones and the other is more current but not quite up to date. if this stuff was more familiar to me i would be better working with it. i owned my c330 streetpilot since 2007 and never did anything but a couple updates to it.since i purchased the nuvi i've done more with it.trying to also learn about my first smart phone. sometimes it's a overload!

Backups

I also suggest putting you critical files and backups on an EXTERNAL drive rather than one connected internally. I only have 1 external drive but it's an esata who's transfer speed is faster than USB2.
For security against viuses, I keep the external drive off unless I intend to copy files or do a backup. I try never to have the drive running when connected to the web. You may consider that a bit anal, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
