Nuvi shuts down when copying files

Perhaps I'm paranoid about backups, but I normally backup my 3590 whenever anything major changes. So, after the 2013.4 update, I attempted a full backup. When it gets to the new gmapprom.img, the GPS shuts down midway into that file backup.

Has anyone else experienced this? I reloaded the map from the Garmin site just in case something odd happened in the download or installation but I still can't backup that file. I also generated a new img file using Mapsource and transferred that file to the GPS. Now the new img file won't copy onto a backup either.

Other than that, the map on the GPS appears to work OK. Backing up the img is really not that important, but I'm just wondering what's going on.

My major concern is that there may be something going on with the internal memory on the GPS as some other files caused the GPS to turn off also. In the case of those files, I overwrote them with the same file from a backup and they would then allow the file to be copied from the GPS to my computer.

Also, I found files on the GPS with strange characters in the file names that were not on old backups. Windows would not permit me to delete them because of a syntax error. (I eventually did delete them using a DOS command prompt.

Checkdisk did not report any problems on the GPS.

My one year warranty is getting very close to running out, so if I have an issue with Garmin, now is the time to do something about it.

Halfway - That's Odd

That's quite strange that it happens halfway through.
Have you tried backing up the gmapprom.img file alone using a different USB port. The USB port should be one wired directly to the motherboard and not off a USB hub.

Also are you copying the file to a media location that has enough room to handle the file size.

If on a laptop make certain the power saver mode is not interfering with the file transfer. That's all I can think of at the moment, perhaps others have better suggestions.

Other than being unable to copy the gmapprom file is the GPS behaving normally and all functions work?

I'm concerned you had files on there prior with strange characters, that means something was corrupt.

Strange behavior

I am using a USB 3.0 port on the front of the computer. I also tried a port in back which is directly off of the motherboard.

I haven't taken the GPS for a spin in the car yet, but it appears to be operating normally. (At least the map shows and I can get it to route in demo mode.)

I was attempting to copy the files to my HD with 125gb of space available.

Yes, I agree that something strange happening. I fail to understand why the GPS would shut down during the transfer. Right now its only the big img file causing the shut down. Initially, other files were causing a shutdown when an attempt to copy them was made. Overwriting those files did resolve that issue. There was a text file on the GPS that would cause the GPS to shut down if I double clicked on it. It too is ok now that I have overwritten the file with one from my backup.

USB 3.0

As the Nuvi doesn't have a USB 3 port, the best you are going to get as far as speed goes is USB 2. It's a lot like people buying an 802.11N wireless access point with a 1.5 MB Internet connection. The most speed you are going to get from your ISP is what comes through your connection - and as you are only paying for a lower speed a high capacity wireless connection isn't going to make it go any faster.

Something Else to Try

To rule out that your PC may be causing the problem are you able to try to copy the gmapprom.img file using another PC. You can temporarily copy it to a folder on that PC for test purposes or even to a flash drive if you have one.

When you state that you had shut downs before attempting to copy different files is disturbing to me. Although you fixed that, the fact that it happened is alarming.

It's quite possible that the gmapprom file is corrupt in some way and Windows disengages the Nuvi at that point, thus the Nuvi shuts off.

If I were in your situation I would download the map again ONLY USING MAPUPDATER and save it to the Nuvi only. This would eliminate that a possible corruption happened when you used Mapsource the last time. Once done I would try to copy the gmapprom.img file from the Nuvi to your hard drive.

If that fixed the problem, I'd imagine the issue was created when transferring the file from mapsource to your Nuvi.

Copying large files.

Will your computer handle large files? What OS and file system are you using. FAT, FAT32 or NTFS
What size is the .img file?

Problem resolved

Thanks to all who have made suggestions.

The problem seems to have resolved itself and that in itself is scary because something is going on.

I took the suggestion to copy to another computer and it worked. The GPS did not shut down.

That seemed strange, so I tried it again on the original computer and it worked this time.

Prior to that I had redownloaded the update from Garmin twice. Same problem.

I next generated an img file using Mapsource to replace the one Garmin installed to the GPS. Same problem.

I had also tried different USB cables and 3 different USB ports on the PC. Same problem.

My initial thought was that Garmin had done something to this file to protect the file from being copied.

Prior to this copy issue, traffic reporting quit working. I did manage to get that back by downgrading the firmware to its "as purchased" version. Once it was determined that traffic reporting was back I updated firmware to the latest version and it still worked.

Its my belief that my GPS has gone wonky, but won't exhibit permanent damage until after my warranty runs out. In the meantime, I'll be caring a spare GPS when traveling in unfamiliar areas.
