Nuvi 855 partial update

Like almost everybody else, I get a 'not enough space...' message when trying to load 2013.4 to the 855. I subsequently loaded only the eastern NA maps but would like voice navigation, which it says is unavailable with this download.

However, when I checked the files on the Nuvi, there is only 1 which is dated 2013. Here are the files I think are pertinent...
gmapbmap.sum 29/10/2009 1kb
gmapprom.gma 02/03/2013 3km
gmapprom.img 02/03/2013 997,664kb
gmapprom.img.img 17/12/2012 1,671,200kb
gmapsprom.sum 29/10/2009 1kb
gmapprom.unl 02/03/2013 1kb
gmapprom1.unl 16/10/2011 1kb

Am I correct in assuming that the gmapprom.img.img is an obsolete backup created by the installation and can be deleted (after copying to computer for safe keeping)? It seems it would free up enough extra space for a complete NA update.

855 can get all of North America

This is about the third thread you've posted messages about updating your 855's maps. I expect the process of helping you could be done much faster if you stick with a single thread and not have to repost all the information and answer all the questions to be asked.

Now, to offer some help to your post:

The nuvi 855, after removing unneeded language, help, text, etc. files, can receive the full North America map update and contain voice navigation files and the small default jcv file--I know this because that's how my 855 is set with the current 2013.40 map and with previous maps. (The 855 can successfully use the large jcv file installed to a SD card but let's not get into that in this thread.)

Your listing of files is very odd and at least some files there came from your use of MapInstall or Mapsource to create maps on your nuvi from the maps on your computer in the past.

You mention a single gmapbmap file but it's a .sum file. If you truly don't have gmapbmap.img, then you nuvi has lost its Basemap which will be a problem for you when outside of eastern NA right now.

You mention one other .sum file and I assume it's a typo since there should not be a file called gmapsprom.sum. In any event, .sum files can be deleted but will gain you next to nothing since they're so small.

You big problem is gmapprom.img.img, a double-extension file, which would never be created by any software so I expect it arrived through your renaming some file manually to this--possibly when your computer's folder options were set to hide extensions of known file types. The .img.img file would not be from some obsolete backup created by the nuvi or update process but is most likely HE (human error).

After making a computer backup of your entire current nuvi for safety's sake, this is what I'd do:

You mention three files that were created March 2, 2013 (using the Canadian dd/mm/yyyy date method): gmapprom.img (about 1 GB and your current eastern NA image file), and its associated gmapprom.gma and gmapprom.unl files that allow the img file to display on your device. I would delete the other four files you identify above.

Once done, I'd remove and replace the 855 battery to give it a good soft reset, then test it and confirm that your map info page still shows 2013.40 (Eastern NA) and that the nuvi works as expected assuming you're currently in eastern NA.

At this point, I'd remove all unneeded files from your nuvi, mostly voice files, and these can be found in the other threads you've posted to regarding updating your 855.

Now check your nuvi 855 through your computer and determine how much free space you have. At this point, your 855 should have well over 2 GB of free space since you deleted the .img.img file of 1.6GB plus several large voice files.

At this point, if you want the full NA map and voice navigation files with the current 2013.40, you can reinstall the map update using Garmin Express, Lifetime Updater, MapUpdater or whatever BUT NOT using Mapsource or MapInstall which may well be the source of your ongoing problems of leaving large residual files on your nuvi preventing future full map updates.

Alternatively, if you're OK with no voice navigation for three months and you will remain in eastern NA, you can just wait for June or so when the next 2014.10 map update arrives where you'll be surprised to find your nuvi receiving the full NA update with voice recognition files.

Whichever option you choose above, you still have one remaining issue which is the missing gmapbmap.img file on your nuvi, unless you have the file and forgot to list it in your above post.

If your nuvi has any gmapsupp or gmapsup1 or similar files, let us know.

Good luck.

Thanks

Huzzah, as they would say at the Garmin booth at the Renaissance Fair.

I expect you have Voice Control again, too.

I don't know what I liked to hear best: your full NA map update, or having the large JCV file.

Yes to all

CraigW:
Yes to voice control. All is well.

I always select 'mute' except when in complicated cities but I'm going to work on proximity sounds for red lights/speed zones next.

Thanks again
