4 New Red Light Cameras in Opelika, Alabama

There are 4 new red light camera locations in Opelika, AL. Basic info is in the news article linked below. Next time I am in the area of the cameras, I will update as to specific direction(s) the cameras are aimed.

From the Opelika-Auburn News (oanow.com): “Contractors with American Traffic Solutions Inc. have been busy the past couple of weeks installing traffic light cameras at some of Opelika’s (Alabama) busiest intersections.

City Engineer Walter ‘Doc’ Dorsey said the traffic-light cameras will be installed at the U.S. Highway 280 and Pepperell Parkway, U.S. Highway 280 and Frederick Road, U.S. Highway 280 and Interstate Drive and U.S. Highway 431 and Samford Avenue intersections.

‘The installations are close to being completed,’ Dorsey said. ‘They started about two weeks ago and probably have another week’s work before they’re done.’”

Red Light Camera UPDATE for Opelika, Alabama – 03/04/2013

The cameras are in place but not yet operational.

The new red light cameras in Opelika, Alabama are being installed at 4 intersections: Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280) & Interstate Drive, Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280) & Frederick Road, Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280) & Pepperell Parkway, and Foxrun Parkway (US Hwy 431) & Samford Avenue.

The cameras are all exactly like the one pictured in the OANews article linked in a previous post. There was not yet any signage when I viewed the camera locations on March 4, 2013.

None of the cameras appear to be “right-turn-on-red-gotcha” cameras because there are dedicated right turn lanes immediately prior to each intersection that allow drivers to complete a right turn without entering the intersection.

There are 2 cameras located at the intersection of Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280) & Interstate Drive. One is focused on the northbound lanes of Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280) and the other on the southbound lanes of Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280). Traffic on Interstate Drive and traffic exiting I-85 southbound at Exit 58 do not appear to be subject to being monitored at this time. Traffic exiting I-85 northbound at Exit 58 and planning to continue northbound on US Hwy 280 would be subject to the camera focused on the northbound lanes of Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280).

There are 2 cameras located the intersection of Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280) & Frederick Road. One is focused on the northbound lanes of Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280) and the other on the eastbound lanes of Frederick Road. There was no camera facing southbound on Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280) and none facing westbound on Frederick Road.

There are 3 cameras located at the intersection of Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280) & Pepperell Parkway. One is focused on the northbound lanes of Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280). One is focused on the eastbound lanes of Pepperell Parkway. One is focused on the westbound lanes of Pepperell Parkway. There is no camera facing southbound on Gateway Drive (US Hwy 280).

There is only 1 camera at the intersection on Foxrun Parkway (US Hwy 431) & Samford Avenue. The camera is focused on the southbound lane of Samford Avenue. There are no cameras focused on the northbound lane of Samford Avenue or in either direction on Foxrun Parkway (US Hwy 431).
