Transfer favorites from Nuvii 1490 to car's Garmin unit

I just got a car with built in Garmin GPS.

I managed to copy my POIs that Ihad saved in my Nuvii 1490, via a flash drive, to the car's unit without a problem.

Now the Favorites: how does one copy the favorites from the 1490 to the car unit?

Regards

current.gpx

You copy Current.GPX to your Flash drive as Temp.GPX and then copy it to the car. Once they have transferred, delete the temp file.

what do you mean by "then

what do you mean by "then copy it to the car"?
how does one do that since there is no "copy to" functionality in the flash drive.

I can copy the file to the flash drive but how do I copy it then to the car?

And how does one then delete the temp file in the car's gps?

Do this with the GPX file.

with as much information

as you have provided, it seems your best bet to answer your questions may be "go to the dealer." We have no idea what car you are speaking of or what your car's documentation says. You did transfer some files to the car, so there has to be a way to transfer you copy of Current and then delete the file,

I agree

I agree we need more information but it could well be possible to have transferred POIs without the ability to issue a copy command.

If the vehicles GPS is like other Garmin units and is able to see the flash drive/SD card when it boots up it may well ask the question about transferring NEW POIs to the device from the card, just like a normal Nuvi would do.

Transfer favorites from Nuvii 1490 to car's Garmin unit

Let me be a bit more clear.

The unit in the car is a Garmin and it has a USB port.

There were two things that I wanted to do: copy from my 1490 my POIs (that mostly came from here... thank you) and second, copy my Favorites.

The POIs process was simple: connected the flash drive to the computer and connected the 1490 to the computer.

The PC recognized both and I copied to the flash drive the POI folder located in the 1490. Then took the flash drive to the car and plugged it into the USB drive. The GPS unit recognized it immediately and prompted me if I wanted to install it. I said yes and that was it. The POIs are in place and working just as before.

When it comes to the Favorites, I assumed it would be basically the same process: copy from the 1490 the GPX folder to the flash unit, plug it into the car GPS and confirm the upload.

This is where the snafu rests: the car GPS doesn't recognize the presence of the folder/files in the flash drive regardless of how I do it: all files from the 1490, just the "current" file, just the "temp" file or the "current" file renamed "temp" in the flash unit.

So the main question is: once I place the "current" or "temp" file in the GPX folder in the flash unit, how do I copy it to the car GPS since the car GPS doesn't prompt me for it as it did with the POIs?

Thanks

Don't Think You Can

As t923347 pointed out the car unit is treating your POI's the same as a regular Garmin when it comes to copying POI's from a SD card automatically to the Nuvi.

I don't think the car unit will recognize a temp.gpx file on a flash drive and add it to the current.gpx file. On a regular Nuvi this is done by copying the temp.gpx file on a PC to the Nuvi. Once the contents the temp.gpx file is added to the current.gpx file, the temp.gpx file should be deleted

The only way to find out is to copy the current.gpx file from your 1490 to the flash drive, then RENAME it to temp.gpx, and see if it adds it to your favorites.

If that doesn't work you can create a folder on the flash drive Garmin\GPX and copy the temp.gpx file into the GPX folder and give that a try.

Either way I don't thnk it will work but no harm in trying.

Edit: How are you able to delete a saved favorite in the car unit? Surely there must be a screen to do that. If so, see if there are any options in that screen.

Transfer favorites from Nuvii 1490 to car's Garmin unit

You just might have shed some on this topic...

I will see as soon as I can get to the car. But first two points:

You mention copying the current.gpx to the flash drive and renaming it temp.gpx. I did and didn't work. Meaning, the car GPS detects the flash unit but doesn't detect the presence of the folder/file in it.

But you also mention to put the file inside a Garmin/GPX folder.

I didn't do that since my 1490 doesn't have the GPX folder inside a Garmin folder: The GPX folder is instead off the "root" of the files directory. I need to try that and see what happens.

Regarding the "How are you able to delete a saved favorite in the car unit" question: it is the same way as in the 1490. There is an option under tools that allows you to do that.

Regarding the possibility of "any options in that screen" I have to take another look just to make sure I didn't miss them the first time (and only time...) that I looked into that screen.

Thanks for you thoughts.

Most newer

Most newer Nuvi's place the current.gpx file in the GPX folder which is in the root of the Nuvi's internal storage. I think it's been some time since the GPX folder was placed inside the Garmin folder.

Personally, I think you maybe stuck with entering each Favorite individually (Where To - enter address/pick a built in POI, pick a city, enter a co-ordinate, etc., and SAVE the entry.

Still have not heard what type and year of vehicle we are talking about here. That knowledge may allow someone with that model or someone that works on those type of cars to answer your question in a couple of seconds.

Found a solution

I'm sure the "solution" that I came up is old hat for most of you, but for the few that, like me, don't have as much experience here it goes.

I had managed to copy POIs from a flash drive to the car unit. It was painless and it worked flawlessly.

Since that worked, I converted the favorites in my 1490 to a POI file. Saved it to the flash drive and uploaded it to the car unit.

Once I had them in, I invoked each one once from the "extras" menu and selected "save". Once you "save" an entry it magically gets copied to the "favorites".

Maybe not that elegant a solution but for me, it did exactly what I needed: copy the favorites from my 1490 to the car unit.

Thanks everyone for all the hints, nudges and suggestions.

Good Job

Glad you accomplished your goal.

Having no experience with a built in car unit I am curious to know if the files are both in your favorites and extra folders. If they are in both I would delete the ones in the extras since it would take up space with the duplication and possibly cause an issue when using the search function.

I do not see an issue with the search function and having dual pois, in favorites and in Extra. I believe the software searches only the area you started the search in.

I agree

I agree, shouldn't be a problem, but manually saving every POI to make it a favorite would be very painful for me. shock
