POI Sounds for Garmin 2595

I just bought a Garmin 2595 and have loaded some POI in CSV and GPX formats. I put the SIM program in the same program file as the POI Loader. I have tried putting wav and also mp3 audio in the same folder as the Csv or GPX files, making sure the names are identical as the csv file or the gpx file.

When I also went into manual mode in the poi loader to select the alert and set a distance.

When I approach a poi, I get a tone (I have tried single tone, constant tone and no tone on the device), but no vocal alert.

I called Garmin and they said that the 2595 will not play an mp3 file, nor a wav file. I can only get tones....

Is this true?

Thanx.....

check the FAQ

Check the FAQ on how to load POI, Icons and sound files.

Here's one that should address your problem.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30396

And for the record, Garmin's response is correct in that no current units support MP3 file playback and no Garmin supplied system will support a WAV file. What they don't tell you is there is a 3rd party program that will allow a WAV file to be included. But that information is in the FAQ.

Remembered sounds

I too have a Garmin 2595. I have added custom POIs with alerts using the TourGuide method and wav sounds. Recently, I wanted to change the wav sounds so I put updated wave files in proper MyPoi folders and reloaded the custom pois. Even though I've manually deleted the GPI file from my Garmin, the unit seems to remember the old wav sounds and uses them instead of the new ones. Are the alert sounds stored elsewhere on the Garmin? Any other suggestions on why my new wave files are not getting loaded? They have names identical to the corresponding gpx and bmp files.

When you manually deleted the gpi file it should delete all file including the wav files. Run poiloader one more time and select remove all pois.

If you are using a Mac make sure to empty the trash can when you removed the old wav files in the My pois folder. Make sure the files are named exactly the same except for the extensions. Example
TourGuide Cracker Barrel.csv
TourGuide Cracker Barrel.wav
Windy's.csv
Windy's.wav

Don't forget to run poiloader in manual mode to set a distance for the alert.TourGuide will default at 1/4 mile in express mode.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just tried re-running the POI Loader with remove all pois checked and verified that the POI file was deleted from the Garmin. I verified that I was following all you other suggestions but unfortunately, I still am having the problem. The old wav file that plays as the alert is not specific to the nearby poi and the same wav plays for a variety of custom poi types encountered. It's as if the default alert sound has been changed. I guess I may need to reset the garmin and start from scratch.

Do you have the correct

Do you have the correct sox.exe installed. Make sure you download from here http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 .Different versions of sox causes problems.

Do you have the latest poiloader? A change back some time ago changed the location of the sox.exe.

This problem sounds a lot like a repeat of the attempt a while ago to use a newer version of sox.exe where odd wav files cropped up and repeated. It took a village of users here to sleuth out the problem realizing that the old sox.exe had to be used and it may have been one of the first "multiple user Contributor(s) of the Week" awards offered at The Factory.

The old sox version 14.0.1 (not to be confused with 14.1.0 or later) is what's needed to work with POI Loader.

PS--congrats on the updated faq, charlesd45!

PPS--here's the old thread showing that newer sox's caused incorrect wav audio...with a big thanks to member "Evert" who finally figured out (by page 2 or 3 in the thread) what was happening with the newer sox.exe versions that caused the odd results:

Sox version

Based on the size and date (1.63MB 1/29/08) it looks like I have the correct sox. I will go ahead and replace it just in case. Thanks again

Two thoughts

Before I start worrying that this is entering The Twilight Zone, let me ask two questions to see if something odd is going on.

1) You were asked if you're using a Mac or PC but you haven't replied. Are you using a Mac? As I understand it, Macs do not need sox.exe AND Macs can give odd results on nuvis after files have been deleted unless the Mac Trash is also emptied.

2) Have you been using POI Loader for a long time? I ask this because POI Loader updates did something odd maybe 1-2 years ago--they moved the folder location that POI Loader is installed to AND did not remove the older POI Loader version. The result is that a computer can have two folders with functioning POI Loader programs--and if you have the correct sox.exe in one of them, it may be the that you see sox in the folder that's not the one being used when running POI Loader. If you're using Windows, what version of Windows are you using.

One last thought. Is anything odd going on with your folder(s) containing your POI csv, gpx, wav, and bmp files or do you have all in a single folder and are you sure that the new wav and csv files, etc. are being placed in the folder that POI Loader is using?

Wav sounds ?

Thanks for the congrats for the FAQ and thanks to Jon M for setting it up for me.Wanted to make it easier to follow through on.I think problem OP has lies in the sox.exe or Poiloader like I posted above.Still curious about if a Mac?

Have you check the wav files?Just click on the new ones and see what message they play or if they play at all.Something just not right if you delete old ones and still getting the old alerts with new ones installed.Do you have a Mac?If you do you will have to clean out the trash bin as soon as you delete the old ones.Don't reboot first.Like posted you don't need sox.exe if you have a Mac.Just the wav file is needed for the custom poi you want it for.

Update

I using a PC with Windows 7. Thanks for all the suggestions. I will have to go back and check to see if there may be another instance of POI loader on my PC. The one I've checked for the current sox is in Program Files (x86). I'll start running thru the suggestions and report back any new information...

Good luck. If Windows 7 search as 8 is. It should find any double files etc pretty easy.

Yes, the POI Loader in Program Files (x86) will be the new one in case you find a 2nd copy elsewhere. Assuming your sox.exe (14.0.1) is in the same folder as POI Loader, then the only reason I can imagine your not hearing correct audio alerts is that for some reason, your nuvi has an older gpi POI file with the older alerts that for some reason has not been deleted when you load new ones, or that your computer has a folder with various POI csv, gpx, wav, bmp files that still contains the older wav files rather than the new ones you want to hear.

Double check that POI Loader is being directed to the computer folder that has your most current files. You may also want to double click the various wav files and make sure that they sound like what you want to hear.

In the Twilight Zone

CraigW wrote:

Unfortunately, I think I am there. I'll try to respond to each suggestion.
1. My search turned up only one instance of POI Loader on my hard drive. It's under Program Files (x86) way down in the POI Loader subfolder. It is version 2.7.2.0. The sox.exe file is in the same subfolder and is version 14-0-1 from the referenced poifactory node.
2. I've backed checked my POI source files on the PC. Just to be sure I created a new folder and checked each wav file I put in the new folder.
3. My POI structure is fairly simple. I have one TourGuide and 3 standard POI files in the main folder along with one sub-folder that includes 3 additional TourGuides and another standard POI file. They all load correctly and work well with the exception of the wav that is played for alerts. Each TourGuide has a different wav file in the same folder with the corresponding TourGuide files. (I've tried some different folder structures with similar results)
5. Only the older wav file plays. That old wav file is no longer included in the POI folders that I now use for loading. The other TourGuide files that it was used with have been deleted as well.
4. I did a reset to factory settings on the Garmin but the old wav alert is still played. The same wav alert is played for all of my TourGuides. None of the new wav alerts play. I've tested each of the new wav files on my PC and they play fine on Windows Media Player.
5. Yes, I'm an Irish Santa that likes craft beer (notice the tap in the avatar). Most of my custom POI alerts are for breweries and brewpubs. I think I need a craft brew right now...I apologize if I've missed replying to anyone's suggestion.
Thank to all for the help.

Sleep mode?

Is your nuvi model one that has a "sleep" mode? I know on the old nuvi 855 with sleep mode, you sometimes have to do a "full power reset" to get new POI's to take. I think you do that by holding the power button for several seconds.

If that doesn't work, I would try a hard reset of your nuvi. Make sure you back up your favorites first.

Yes, there is a sleep mode so a full power recycle may be needed to get new POIs "to take."

Still trying

I've tried the power cycle a few times with no success. The new POIs seem to load ok without doing it. At least the custom POI organization changes to match the changes I've made on my PC. I have been using Extra POI Editor to convert csv files to gpx format before loading to the Garmin. I tried going back to just loading the csv files but that didn't resolve the problem. I can't imagine where the old wav file it's using is coming from.

Did you search your computer for all the wav files to see if any thing not right. Using Extra Poi Editor
did by chance did you include a wav file with the complete file or a single one by building it into the file?

file names?

One common problem faced by many is the naming structure of the files. You state you are using TourGuides for some of your files. I know I had fallen into the name trap several times myself, so check that all your files have the EXACT same name. The keyword TourGuide must be written exactly as shown, one word with an upper case T and G. The icon file MUST have the exact same name with the exception of the file extension, the three letters following the period. The same convention is used for the sound file, except the extension must be a .WAV.

Visually, the files are:
TourGuidefile.GPX (CSV)
TourGuidefile.JPG
TourGuidefile.WAV

So, check your files again, then check them still again. Just one letter or other character being different can cause similar problems.

charlesd45 wrote:

I'm not sure how this would be done but by changing out all the files and reverting to the csv, I don't think it's the problem. I'm sorry to report that the last power cycle seems to have caused more serious problem. Now I can't get the Garmin to power on. I just get a black screen, no image, regardless of whether I use the power button, plug it into the car or plug it into the computer. So unless this get resolved, I'll have to return it (it's only 4 mos old).
By the way, I have rechecked the file names several times and sent a copy to Charlesd45 for him to review. I don't think my remembered wav problem is naming issue.

Thoughts

Have you contacted Garmin?

Try a different USB cable and also try different USB ports and see if the computer thinks there is a Nuvi attached.

Big improvement

I left it charged overnight and was able to get it going with a reset (10 sec on button) this morning.
And, with a big Thank You to Charlesd45, when I loaded a modified set of wav files he provided, the new alerts worked. I believe he changed the files from stereo to mono (I was not aware they were stereo sounds).
I still have a secondary sound after the primary alert but that's not a big issue. At least it's not the long voice alert I had previously.
