garmin 3490

I am looking at buying a 3490.
Any comments on this unit would help.
Do the new Garmin models have rest stops included and if so do they show up on the screen the same way as the ones form this site do? Is there a alert sound that comes on? If rest stops are built in why would I need to download rest stops form this site?
Will this unit hold the latest maps without adding a storage card?

Thanks for your help........Cy

No, it doesn't

You are confusing 2 different but separate things. None of the built-in POI files from Garmin will alert. They may display, but the audio alert is a function of the extras found in Custom Files along with the ability to display a greater variety of icons.

I Like Mine, but...

I am happy with mine. Works well and has good features. Only comments: 1) If I bought another one, it'd probably be a 5-inch or larger screen. My old eyes have a difficult time focusing. 2) the HD traffic feature is very localized. Doesn't provide traffic info except for major metro areas.

The

The Nuvi does hold "Rest Areas" in the built in POIs that are part of the map data. As pointed out, there is no alert for these.

You should be able to update the maps without an SD card, especially if you use Garmin's MapUpdater software and not Garmin Express which often reports there is not enough room for an update even when there is lots of space.

Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.

Still Current

I have a 3490LMT and I was surprised to see that it was not discontinued when the 3597LMT came out. I guess since it has pedestrian mode as well as a smaller screen they kept it? Surprisingly they are the same price too! I still like mine. I agree it's a bit tough to see vs. a 5-inch model but I have the case and throw it in the pocket when needed for when I travel.

Maybe, but my guess is that they don't discontinue older models until they get the existing inventory sold down.
