An Odd Scene in Google Maps

GlobeTurtle found this image in Google Maps today. It looks like some sort of police activity involving a stopped big rig truck.

Could be responding to a chemical spill or unauthorized transport of HAZMAT.

Google Sources

After viewing the downloaded image of the truck and associated activity, I clicked on the link to the Street View. Just before the truck image disappeared and the street view started to load, I saw the following along the bottom of the screen: "Imagery 2013 DigitalGlobe, GeoEye, The Florida Department of Enviornmental Protection, U.S. Geological Survey, Map Data 2013 Google".

Follow up searches revealed that Google gets some of its images from the companies and goverment agencies listed. I'm guessing this image was obtained by Google from the Florida Deparment of Environmental Protection.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

That thing almost looks like empty grand stands for a parade.

Okay, I think I figured out

Okay, I think I figured out what all of this is. The roads are closed once a month for a cultural fair. Scroll down to the bottom of the link for "Viernes Culturales"

My $0.02 ...

The road to the South is closed off for something like a parade - see grand stands and folks waiting on sidewalk on Tamiami Trail.

The truck is being forced to turn right by several saw horse like road barriers and police cars.

Nothing sinister.

Cool photo. Looks like the

Cool photo. Looks like the block is signed off and covered by the cops. Don't think it is a parade.

Fun little scene

It really is a fun little scene. I will be curious to see if somebody can fully explain this situation with some plausible line of reasoning.

It's a flour truck

The police are directing it to Dunkin Donuts. grin

Odd Indeed

If you switch to Street View, the tanker truck disappears!

Tanker

That's a fuel tanker, like they would carry gasoline or Diesel fuel in.

I couldn't find the photo date of the overhead view other than a 2013 copyright date. But the street view photos are from March 2011.

The likelihood that both would match would be near zero--and if they were simultaneous, then we'd see the Google photo van in the overhead.
