Cloud
Anybody figure out how using the Cloud works?
When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is only difficult for the others. It is the same when you are stupid.
There maybe
There maybe other uses but if you enable Cloud, every time you create a waypoint etc. in Basecamp it's automatically stored in your personal Cloud storage location. You appear to get 150MB of storage space when you enable Cloud storage using your myGarmin.com user name and password.
Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.
What Cloud Is It?
myGarmin or Apple iCloud?
Navigon and Garmin iPhone apps have settings for activating "iCloud".
And in BaseCamp, the 'cloud', whatever it really is, shows up as a device. When I Get Info on it, it appears to show up as a myGarmin cloud, not Apple iCloud.
So how do we use this cloud?
Is it usable from an iPhone?
When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is only difficult for the others. It is the same when you are stupid.
It's Garmin's Version of iCloud
So the 'cloud' is Apple's iCloud, not related to myGarmin. And nowhere did I have to enter my myGarmin ID or password.
So is BaseCamp now sending data, and if so what, to iCloud for synching to other devices, and of so, what other devices? Will this automatically synch with Garmin Apps (or Navigon) on an iPhone?
not connected to Apple's iCloud... the two are not physically connected. It is associated with your MyGarmin log-in... which appears to be persistently stored in BaseCamp, even after updating, as I've only put my MyGarmin username an password in one time on Base Camp... and it shows me logged in whenever I launch Base Camp... and there's nowhere I can find to use it from iPhone... maybe a future enhancement to Garmin's iOS app features...

myGarmin vs Apple iCloud

Yeah, I have found that it is indeed a myGarmin cloud, even though I don't remember ever entering my myGarmin username/PSWD in BaseCamp. I find that the cloud device that shows up in BaseCamp is logged into my myGarmin account. However, in Navigon and the Garmin iPhone apps, they have an option for using iCloud, which is supposed to be Apple.
So how does one use this BaseCamp cloud capability? All I can think of right now is if I was using more than one computer to maintain my GPSr devices. This would be an external cache of waypoints, tracks, routes, etc. that will be updated and referenced as needed, and used as a master.
Which leads to the question: how do we use the iCloud capability that is already in the iPhone apps?

Yep. It saves stuff from your device(s) and lets you fetch from wherever...

Seems rather self-evident... the app stores its data in iCloud, and if you update the app, or change devices, you use the app and let it restore its data...

Thanks for the heads up on the update. I like to keep my stuff updated as much as I can. Sometimes I don't think about it. THANKS!
OK.....so where the heck am I?
Starting
Starting to see reports about Basecamp 4.1.0 crashing with when certain devices are connected to the computer. No crashes reported if no device is attached however.
Seen posts were a Zumo crashes using either the PC or Mac version while the same user doesn't see crashes attaching a Nuvi 760. Another user says his 1310, 1490 and Etrex 20 all work fine but another user says his 1450 crashes.
Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.
Custom POI
It is kind of nice being able to see the custom POI's from the .GPI file on the map and search for them in BaseCamp. The custom POI's seem to show in all views, even if you have something other than the nuvi selected in the device tree.

I ran into the Basecamp 4.1.0 crash with my nuvi 755T. I traced it down to a stray .GPI file named 006D135900.GPI. This is not my normal custom POI file created with POI Loader which is named poi.gpi. I am not sure where this file came from as I don't recall ever creating or copying a file of that name on my 755T. But after deleting it, Basecamp accesses the 755T without problem and shows all my custom POI's (from poi.gpi) on the map.

Interesting
Interesting, although I'd hate to see my custom POIs on the map as there are thousands of them, I don't see any custom POIs at all using my 3790 or the 2460.

BaseCamp Only
I'm missing something... I can only access this cloud through BaseCamp. I can't get to the cloud directly from an iPhone or iPad. Can someone help me get to the cloud directly from an iPhone or iPad?
I don't see the app(s), Garmin or Navigon, putting anything up to the cloud. I can't see this cloud depository on my iPhone, am I supposed to?

Because this Garmin Cloud is a basecamp thing as far as I can tell... take that back - I think it may also be used by Garmin's fitness apps & devices... there may be ways to see that fitness stuff via a personalized web site... I don't know for sure - don't have any of that stuff.
For our purposes - Basecamp is the only interface to the Garmin Cloud.
Garmin's iOS apps put their stuff in Apple's iCloud - the one associated with your AppleID & iCloud email, and the same one you can back-up devices to... And there's really nothing to see there - the iOS apps just store a copy of your personal data from the apps, which you can "see" in the app.
There is only one place on an iPhone or iPad you can "see" what an app stores in iCloud: Settings>> iCloud>> Storage & Backup>> Manage Storage -- it is there you can see what apps are storing data in your iCloud, and how much space they're taking up. You can also see what's being stored for device back-ups, and you can delete those if you desire.

Updates for Basecamp are available
I just down loaded the Basecamp update. I does not work. It immediately quits after starting.
Checking the Garmin forums, it seems to be a problem.
Thank you, t923347

No crashing on the 3790. It did take a while to update the gprommap, though.

Was Hoping For True Synching, Not Backup
I was hoping for true data synching through some cloud amongst iOS and OSX devices, which would now 'synch', albeit with some limited manual intervention, all POI between the GPSr devices, iOS devices, and MacOS devices. I find the synching among iOS and MacOS devices as one of the most useful recent developments. It would be great if as I am creating waypoints or routes in BaseCamp, they are automatically sent to my iOS device apps (Garmin or Navigon apps) as POI or Favorites.
Is there a way, other than manual typing, to get all my wayPOInts in BaseCamp onto my iOS devices? That's what I was hoping this cloud capability would provide.

It sure would be nice if ...
... there was a way to simply drag a route line to a point on the map and have that point included in the route. That's the one thing I really miss from Mapsource
Nuvi 2460
Rubberband route tool is in BC
1. Select a route.
2. Select the Insert Tool.
3. Select the route near whre you want the insert.
4. Position the cursor which moves the rubberband, similar to MapSource, and select to position that new via point.

Tracks
Skip the cloud, skip routing, skip it all. I use the track logs for going back and referencing dates and times and making routes. Basecamp still is unable to display the tracks, which the GPS names as Active Logs, in a chronological order as I could in MapSource. Why would anyone want tracks that can't be displayed in any kind of logical order.
It funny that the GPS will record track points in "yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm" format but then names the track log as "Active Log: dd MON yyyy hh:mm" which makes no sense, to me anyway.
I like all my Garmins. I don't have any problems with most of their software programs and for the most part have become a little more comfortable with BaseCamp. I just don't understand any of their logic with this naming convention.
Anyone know of a means to easily display Active Logs in order in Basecamp?

I've done that in BaseCamp...
... how did you do that? I think I've tried every tool and combination I can think of and don't see a way to drag a route line to a new point. With Mapsource, I just select a route, click on it a 2nd time and add a new point. That doesn't work with BC. Alternatively, Selecting a route, holding down the left mouse button and draging the route to the point I want add doesn't work with any tool I tried. How do you do it?

On a Mac, you use the hand tool, use the option button, and click the route on the map, and move it...

Hand Tool and Selector Tool
On a Mac, you use the hand tool, use the option button, and click the route on the map, and move it...
It also works with the selector tool.
tomkk, just hover your pointer over the route and an info panel should be displayed with instructions on how to move the route (add a waypoint graphically by dragging the route). This is on a Mac, and has to work similarly on a PC.

Thanks to you both. Although both of those make perfect sense, neither work on a PC. Your suggestions did, however, lead me down a path where I discovered how it does work. I rediscovered a "Insert" tool that I never could figure out how it worked. It does insert a point in a route but the sequence is odd: select a route using the Select tool, switch to the Insert tool and select the route again with the Insert tool. After that, I can drag to another point that gets added to the route.
I don't care for the sequence needed to insert the point but it does work now that I know how.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the heads up on this update.
I don't see it
Started Basecamp 4.0.5 just now and selected 'Check for software update' and it says no software update available. Maybe they pulled it already?
Yes.
Garmin has pulled Basecamp 4.1.0 because of the problem with the 006D135900.gpi file. However, if you still want it, it is available at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435.
I simply removed this stray .gpi file from my nuvi and Basecamp 4.1.0 is working fine for me.

I already have .NET 4 installed and I don't want to go back. Any experience? Did they mean ".NET framework 3.5 SP1 MINIMUM is required?"
