Nuvi 750 Car Erratic

My 750 car drives beside the road you are on and then it will be on the other side of the road for a while. This happened last night on I-44 a road that has been around 100 years. Its like the sats don't really have you located good or something. This is the one I had trouble loading the update on weeks ago until I got the sd card.

hard reset

then reload the maps from scratch.

Hard Reset

Maybe you can send the 750 into Garmin for a wheel alignment, sounds like a mechanical problem. grin

Sorry I couldn't resist.
I would try a hard reset making sure you backed up your favorites first. If that doesn't help I would download the maps again to the SD card. Then do another hard reset.

Possibility also exists that there is a hardware failure for the internal antenna. However that is doubtful since I assume you only have had the problem with your latest map update.

Edit: Slow typer Box Car is faster.

Check the calendar...

Suggest you check the GPSr calendar as well. If that unit is telling you that I-44 has been around for a hundred years, it's obviously got some other problems.

I couldn't resist, either!

Seriously, I would look for the "stick to roads" command, if it's present on that unit. My 560 "sticks to roads" almost exclusively, and I have no option to turn it off.

Questions

Can we assume you're not accidentally in off-road mode and are in Automobile mode?

Tools/Settings/Navigation/RoutePreference

Tools/Settings/System/UsageMode

Do you have City Navigator installed and checked? What do you see here--tell us exactly what you see:

Tools/Settings/Map/MapInfo

If you don't see City Navigator--or if it's not checked--you'll be using only the Garmin Basemap rather than City Navigator. Also, if you installed only a portion of City Navigator rather than all of North America--and you're currently outside of your City Navigator area, you'll again just be using the Basemap.

Garmin software tries very hard to put vehicles on roadways even when the GPS signals show the vehicle to be only nearby a road so your result is quite odd. One thing that could mess things up is a front windshield with an embedded antenna or heat coils that degrade the GPS signal reaching the car's interior. Did you possibly buy a new car, replace a windshield, rent a vehicle, etc?

http://www.gpsreview.net/snap-to-roads/

Is your finding quite rare or does it happen a lot? If rare, give me a rough Mile Marker or nearby exit on I-44 and I'll use Mapsource to compare the current 2013.30 map (which I assume is what you're having problems with) and earlier versions. I'll reply back with any alignment issues I see with the latest map.

I have that sporadically

It could just be satellight reception or the sun in a crazy alignment with the stars. grin

Never mind. It must have

Never mind. It must have been dying a slow death as it will not come on today in the cradle or by USB cable. Tried the hard reboot and nothing works. No life what so ever. Time for a new one.

My 760 use to do that.

My 760 use to do that. Wonky vehicle position and no turn on conditions. It was fixed with a new battery. Most electronics do not function well with low voltage condidtions.

I would agree that a new battery may well be the solution. There is a simple video on youtube showing how to change the battery. I did it on a 760 and it was easy - even for me and I'm not what you would call "dexterous" by any means.

I'd hate to have to go to a newer model. The 750 and 760 were/are excellent units.

Battery Or Try This

Here is the link member thrak was referring to on how to change the battery on the 750.
http://www.newpower99.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=GAR...

It is one of the easiest Nuvi's to replace the battery. On the 765T I had I changed the battery in s few minutes.
You will need to buy the battery and the tolls to open the unit. You can get them cheaply on Ebay.

One last thing you can try.
Last week I was backing up some files on my 2460LMT.
The battery was fully charged and I removed the Nuvi from the computer with the Safely Remove Hardware in the system tray.

Later I went to turn the unit on and it was completely dead, only a black screen, Hitting the power button did nothing. Then I connected it to the PC and it was not recognized. Next I plugged in into a wall charger, again nothing. Lastly I put it in the cradle and plugged it into the car, absolutely nothing.

Checking my purchase date I discover its 1 month out of warranty. I go back to the car and plug it in again and still nothing. In desperation I keep tapping the power button, low and behold it comes to life with the battery showing full charge. I never had a problem with it before or since it came back to life. I suspect something just went wrong with the power button but can't be sure since whenever plugging into an external power source that always activates it without the need of the power button.

New battery?

If you decide to try a new battery before replacing the GPS with a new model, here's a 750 battery with tools and free S&H for under $20:

http://www.batteryship.com/htmlos/htmlos.cgi/batteryship/cat...

I'm 90% sure that this is the vendor I used when I bought my 750 battery.

The last sign of life I saw

The last sign of life I saw this morning was low battery before it went dark. I already watched the video and I am considering a battery try. I have another 750 so I could always put the battery in it.

CraigW,I had checked and

CraigW,I had checked and double checked the settings and have city nav checked. I am thinking maybe this battery deal some others mentioned may be valid. I was around lebanon,Mo when the car was on both sides of the road and off by a lot. This is in the same car with a permanent dash mount so nothing there changed. When I got to Oklahoma it was correct the rest of the way to the daughters home. I believe may order the battery just for curiosity if nothing else.

Could the car cord be bad?

If you were doing a long trip and the car cord was dead the nuvi would have depleted its internal battery. There is a fuse inside the cigar lighter plug and sometimes the plug will fall apart. Use a cell phone charger with a mini USB connector to charge the nuvi for at least 5 hours. A USB cable to a computer will not supply enough current to charge the battery effectively.

Trying that now.

Trying that now.

When you turn the nuvi on

The nuvi will not go on when connected to the cell phone charger. After 5 hours' charge unplug the charger and hold the power switch "on" for a long time. If the battery is good the nuvi should go on.

I just installed the new

I just installed the new battery in my GPS and reloaded the maps including Canada since I am using the SD card now. I will go for a drive in a few days and check it out. If ok I will use for backup. I decided I deserved a new toy so I ordered a 2595LMT which should be here Monday. The new one has many more functions than the old one so it was time to upgrade anyway

2595LMT

Adkcek - I have a 2595LMT and once you use it a few times, you'll relegate your 750 to backup status. The 2595 is a great unit.

Please keep us updated on

Please keep us updated on the status of the 750, if the battery fixed it.

I went back to St Louis

I went back to St Louis earlier in the month and my 750 is rock solid like it used to be. The battery I knew wouldn't stay up but I only used it in the car so i had never worried about it. The new battery appears to have fixed the problem but I still have a hard time believing that was the problem. It fixed the calculation problem and the car driving out in left field. Still kinda of think I like my 750 better than the new 2595 I bought.

My original unit is a 750. I bought a 2450 and love it. The 750 has more on it that I miss, we loved to hear the trip information on mp3 while we were driving but can't do that on the 2450, BUT the 2450 is much faster acquiring sats. and is bigger. So, the 750 is in the drawer and has not been removed since I bought the Nuvi 2450.

I have used the first three below.
Amazon -You have to click on MP3 music and then look throuth the list that comes up for trip guides on Amazon, some are songs and some guides.
www.italyguides.it/ is good
www.audible.com is good

Rick Steves has some but I don't remember using them.

I just google Mp3 trip guides, or mp3 trip guide Italy (or where ever you want) and come up with a lot.

Just google and see what all you come up with.
I have used both the free ones and the ones you pay for. Most places will let you hear a little before you buy.

It's been a while but I remember I had to convert some to MP3. There is a free program for this on some of the web sites. I think it was wav files or something like that.

Have fun looking....

Forgot about these trip guides...

Have not used any of these guides in a few years. Guess I'm gonna have to borrow my 750 back from my daughter and let her use the 40LM for a bit.
