Proofing A POI

This is just a heads-up to those who proof their POI files. I always double check any file I download and recently could not get one Point Of Interest to work. It was one of my own creations so I am not putting the "blame" on anyone else, just letting this site know the problem and how I fixed it (a CSV file, but also could have been GPX). Using Extra POI Editor (a really great program by the way), I attempted to view one entry on the map and it would not display. After trouble shooting the problem, I found the problem in the co-ordinates. I always use h ddd.ddddd format for Longitude and Latitude using 6 decimal places. When I was entering the Latitude co-ordinate, I inadvertently typed a space between the second and third digit after the decimal point, thus causing the problem.
One can proof such a mistake using Excel. Highlight the column(s) for co-ordinates and use the Find function and in the Look for box, simply type in a space and hit search to Find All. You can then correct any problems found. You can also use Excel and ASAP if you have that great add-in installed. I never even thought of looking for an errant space in the co-ordinates before. Hope this might be helpful to anyone else.

Kudos to all at POI Factory - a great site!

Usually it will load up to the line that is the mistake.

We have found that most poi files that have errors will load up to the line that is bad. Poi loader will give you the line.

Style

For some reason I like a space after every comma. In my eyes, it looks better.

In one of my files, i couldn't get to read one entry, I'm pretty good at proofing my code, and I usually spot the errors right away, but this time I couldn't find anything wrong. After a long sleepless night, I found it. Between the last character from the last entry, and the first character of the one that I couldn't read, there was two characters. The first one was the enter (eol), the second one was invisible, but I had to hit backspace twice to go back. Now it's another thing that I check for if I have a problem.

More proofing.

EPE also has an easy access to Google Earth Display by a right-click on the POI list, where you can look at Street View to get a precise location for most POIs.

Another error

Very often a space is added to excel pasted values, I'm referring to a space added to the far right end. Many programs see this value as an error.
