Garmin Screen Shields

Does anyone know if screen shields for the Garmin Nuvi 50LM are recommended to prevent scratches to the display screen?

I ordered one but did not yet put it on.

Welcome

Welcome, Anonymous Bob, to The Factory.

This topic has come up before and I believe the consensus is that even for folks who like protective screens on cell phones, tablets, handheld GPS units, etc., most do not feel the need for a screen protector for an automotive or vehicular GPS.

What is highly recommended is a case for the nuvi (Amazon sells several under their Amazon Basics brand that are quite good and considerably cheaper than a genuine Garmin brand--but Amazon sells the genuine Garmins as well.) Other recommendations are to never leave the GPS in an unattended vehicle due to heat and theft issues.

Screen protector

I believe the 50LM has a plastic screen. Put the protector on since every time you clean it you may cause some tiny scratches,

As for a protective case, eBay has far better prices than Amazon. As an example a hard case for $ 8.91 delivered to you.

I have have two Nuvi's: a 255 and a 2595. They get a lot of daily use. The 255 has a scratch, but only because it dropped off the windshield one time (suction mount) and glanced off the shifter on the way down. The 2595 has none. The plastic layer already on the screen seems to do a good job protecting them.

You mean once a month, when I lick my thumb and wipe it across the screen to get the schmutz off? Because that's about all the cleaning my 760 has gotten in the past 4 years...

GPS would be thing of the past by the time you scratch it well.

GPS screen protector no need.

I never had any screen protector on the last several GPS and the screen is perfectly fine. Save your $$.

I've not used one - but would suggest trying a vent mount. Often i noticed certain sunglasses will cause the screen to appear as if in the sun.

I just bought one from Clarivue for its anti glare properties. I prefer not to always have to clean smudges on glass screens, but with voice command I don't tough this GPS much anyways.

A GPS can take you where You want to go but never where you WANT to be.

Never Used One...

I have never used a screen shield on any of my three Garmin units, and simply wipe them with a microfiber cloth when finger oil remains get too heavy. You can also use a light drop of solution intended to clean computer screens or LCD TV's.

Only once

I used one on my first unit, a Nuvi 260. All my subsequent ones have gone without. Non have any scratches but they are all kept in cases when not in use, don’t want them rattling around in the glove box naked. The 260 is now used by my granddaughter (age 7) when travelling with me, so I will leave the screen protector on, just in case.

Regardless of peoples opinions, the OP has already bought a screen protector and has it in his / her possession and therefore might as well install it!!!
