Kenwood DNX-7160

What's the best way to get the latest camera POIs loaded onto the headunit and then to keep it current? Trying to establish a process to make this as easy as possible.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Factory. The easiest method is the one found in your owner manual for the Kenwood - assuming your model allows the addition of extra POI files.

Kenwoods are Garmins

The Kenwood unit IS a Garmin unit. Garmin's POI Loader works, etc.

(At least this is true for the DNX710EX. I think all Kenwoods' are Garmins. If you don't believe me, go to www.garmin.com/kenwood for update information.

It is a Garmin unit. I'm mainly looking for some guidance on a general PROCESS (preferably the least painful) in order to maintain the red light/speed camera POIs on the Kenwood.

Not arguing that at all. What i'm trying to say is that maybe you would have better support if you posted into the "other gps brands" Maybe, maybe not.
My two units are Garmin models, so i stay here. If I had a tom-tom I wouldn't be in this Forum. I also do not know anything about tom-tom's.

Process

Here's what I do.

Download the latest POI files into a directory on my hard drive. (I have other files in there, too. I also have the icons that I like to see.)

Stick a SD card into my computer. If you can't, then get an adaptor.

Run POI Loader. Select the directory the file is in. Select a Garmin Device as opposed to My Computer. (Yes, I know you haven't attached a Garmin Device. But pretend the SD Card is a Garmin Device.) Then, in the Pick the Device dropdown, pick the SD Card.

If you feel gung ho, there are options you can play with.

After POI Loader is completed -- a few seconds? -- remove the SD Card.

Go to your car. Turn on the Kenwood. Go to a Navigation page (as opposed to the audio side). Hold the button that accesses the CD Drive. Do not just push it for a second -- keep holding it. When the screen is mostly out of the way, you'll see a slot for the SD drive behind the screen. Stick the drive in the slot and close the screen using the same button.

The map reboots. You should get a message saying that it found new custom POIs. Press yes (or whatever). You should get another message saying that all your current custom POIs (if any) will be deleted. Press yes (or whatever).

The POIs will be loaded.

Now, find the nearest Red Light Camera and run it. If you don't get a ticket, please report it to the site. (This last step is optional.)

You'll want to keep all your custom POIs downloaded to one directory on your hard drive. That way all of them, not just the latest Red Light Cameras, will be loaded on the Kenwood each time. (Replace older versions of a file with the newer version.)

After you've done it a couple of times, you'll find that the process is painless. However, please don't stick the SD Card into the Kenwood while the car is moving. That's what red lights are for.

Why go elsewhere; it's a Garmin

Why would he get better answers from the Other GPS forum? It's a Garmin. It uses Garmin Software. It loads POIs exactly the same as any other Garmin that uses an SD card. (The only difference is figuring out how to open it up enough to get to the SD slot.)
