I've tried using the mp3 sound file with my DNX710EX with no success. Before I tried the wav option, I contacted Garmin Customer Service, who said that it didn't support either mp3s or wavs.
Is Customer Service correct and I'm stuck with the annoying notification sound, or can I try wavs?
yes - and no

They are correct in stating the unit doesn't "support" WAV sounds. However, with the correct version of SOX,exe in the same folder on your computer that has POILoader.exe, WAV files can be converted automagically to a file Garmin can use. As it requires a non-Garmin software product, they can say the units do not support WAV sounds.

I had a Kenwood unit in my last car and using the sox file with wav format sound files and then loading with POI Loader the sounds played back fine,
