Speed warning

My TomTom Start 55 TM used to warn me when I was 5 mph over the speed limit. It is now warning me when I am 3 mph over.

I thought there was a setting where this threshold could be set but I can't find it.

Can someone tell me if this can be set by the user and where it is in the menu?

Thanks!
Jim

I don't know if this is a completely authoritative answer, but the first reply in the tomtomforums.com thread here says that the threshold is not user-adjustable.

Probably No Joy

I do not have your model myself, so I may be in error, but I don't think that setting the threshold is an option on the Start 55.

By any chance do you live in Canada? The reason that I ask is that the last time I drove in Canada it seemed like the metric and English systems were used almost interchangeably, and if you started off with the GPS set to display in metric units and switched to a display in English units, this might explain the apparent change in threshold speed.

If your GPS were set to display in the metric system, the speed warning would trigger at 5 km/hr over the limit, which is equivalent to 3 mph.

I'm not a Canadian eh

@VersatileGuy, It may be so that it is not user-adjustable, which is why I can't find it. I have a faint recollection of either seing it on one of my XXL models or the Start model I currenlty have, or hearing a discussion which may have involved a higher model with the setting.

@ET, I'm not Canadian, nor am I from there, and I have never been there. My setting Your explanation makes a lot of sense. But when would the setting change? In the past my TomTom would warn at 5mph over the speed limit. It wasn't until this trip that I noticed it would warn at 3mph over. I don't recall exactly but I thought that even at the begining of the trip it was 5mph over.

What would cause the setting to change? I might think when the software on the TomTom was updated, but I did that a while ago and haven't noticed anything. If the speed warning is controlled by the map rather than the software, I just updated my maps before taking this trip. It may be that the current map is setup for 5KH and is registering as 3mph.

Software changes associated with "Safety Cameras"?

FWIW, the only times that I have paid any attention to the threshold value of my speed alert, the alert appeared at 3 mph over the local limit. I am not questioning your experience, just reporting my own.

It may be that there is a difference in the settings that ship with various TomTom models. I know that I have seen differences between models that provide a strong indication that they have multiple design teams who do not appear to talk with each other, or even look at what has been done in the past.

Because of laws recently implemented in France, TomTom has been going through a *lot* of software updates associated with speed cameras ("safety cameras") and it could be that these spilled over to the speed limit alerts. I see no obvious reason why this would be the case, but that does not mean that it did not happen.

All of this is speculation on my part, so please don't take it as fact.
