Left or right?

Hi, I have a Garmin NUVI 2460 and since I updated my maps I get wrong "arriving at" destination directions. It usually says: "You have arrived at your destination it is on your LEFT" when it really is on the Right. Is there any way to fix this problem? Thanks.

I get that too

Not sure what to do, but on my 2555 and 2460 since updating the maps I tend to get similar results. Guess I have to use my eyesight now sad .

If this is happening when you are navigating to a numerical address (eg 123 Main St), then there is no way for you to "fix" it.

It's important to understand how addresses are assigned to the map in some areas. Addresses are plotted on the map using a set of "rules" such as 1) odd numbers on the east and even numbers on the west or 2) even numbers on to the north and odd numbers to south.

If the actual addresses don't follow the "rules", then "errors" can result.

If you are navigating to a Point of Interest, it might be locating it via the address. Or the map data may just have the location in the wrong place.

The only thing you can do is to report it to Navteq.

.
And I will add my standard caveat to using a GPS unit. Please remember that the unit is a tool to ASSIST you in navigating.

Don't forget to use that thing between your ears.

Yes, maybe if you report it,

Yes, maybe if you report it, it might get fixed in a future version of the maps.

Left or Right

Thanks for the response and explanation. The Left or Right confusion did not start happening until I updated my maps. I hate having to update them on my Garmin. It takes hours and I never know what new problem is going to show up. What I have done to correct the Left Right issues is that when I arrive at destination I have never been to, I use the "Where am I?" view and save it when I am outside the place I want to be. Hopefully, next time if I go there and don't exactly remember the building, it will have saved my spot. However, I am not sure if Left or Right is announced from a saved "Where am I" location.

Add to this, I am "locationally challenged" and have a lousy sense of direction. It runs in my family sad smile

Left and Right Flipped

I have also noticed more problems with left or right being flipped since the 2012.20 update. It's not a big problem when you have an idea what you're looking for, or it's a less traveled street - but it can be a pain on major thoroughfare surprised

Motorcycle Mama's explanation was helpful. I wonder if Navteq is using more "middle of the road" locations for addresses, rather than a specific side of the street?

Don't worry

I don't worry about it, if the GPS gets me within a couple of hundred feet of any place in the USA and I can't find it from there I better stay home.

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

Just remember, you don't HAVE to update your maps.

Leave them as they are if you are happy with how they are (or used to be) and if you are worried about "problems".

I only update....

...about every 18 to 24 months. I see no need to update every three or four months.

Kind of funny

My Nuvi 750 has always been confused by left and right. While navigating it will tell me to bear right while the screen will show a gradual bend to the left. My wife and I get a kick out of it, we also love the mispronounciation of street and/or county road names.

Thing that bugs me when doing a multible stop route

If you don't hit exact spot it will not move to next point

Your GPS is a "GUIDE" not

Your GPS is a "GUIDE" not gospel.

...

I suppose it's better than nothing at all.

Left or Right?

I have the same problem with the newest map. I've learned to just look on both sides of the road to be safe. The previous map version was more accurate with the left or right issue. Not sure what they could've done to cause this, other than change their "rules" completely.

Right - the "other" Left

I don't have a problem with

I don't have a problem with left or right, I have a problem with weird routes ever since the update. Example: it wants me to take a road instead of the highway which by the way is faster.

WHEN I GO SOMEWHERE

And take my GPS and routes me a different way than I want to go, I just ignore the GPS and take my route any way.

A good rule of thumb
