"ATS provided former U.S. Attorney Ed Dowd to speak on the company’s behalf. When asked about why he thinks some people hate the red light cameras, Dowd replied, 'People want to run red lights when they’re in the mood for it. It’s up to the municipality and ATS to stop them.'"

I hate red light cameras because if I'm in the mood to run a red light, I can't? Who in their right mind actually decides to run a red light?

I don't have any names smile but I see a few with every light cycle on John Deere Road in Moline IL.

spend some time in my neighborhood

Every day there are 5 or more drivers that try - and fail - to beat a light on my route. The speed limits on the two streets are 45 for one and 35 for the other. It's those on the 45 MPH street doing about 60 because they had warning the light was changing and didn't want to spend a minute or so of their time waiting for the light to cycle. That's who "actually decides to run a red light."

Around here, there is at least 1 or 2 people at every light that make this decision.

Well, I'm sure they aren't in their right minds, but they do make the decision to run it.

But a live LEO can't catch them?

A LEO can learn em while giving the ticket, a Cam only takes the money!

Wow! Ed Dowd is so omniscient, he knows what's in peoples' heads. He can see a car go through an intersection and accurately tell the "mood" of the person in side. Neat trick, Ed!

Never mind the fact that increasing the yellow light interval by a second RLC camera intersections see an immediate drop in violations between 40 and 80 percent at most intersections.

I don't think that increasing the yellow interval somehow instantly puts people in a better "mood". So, I have to believe that the bulk of red light running is an engineering problem, not a "mood" problem.

Now, I'm going to crawl into Ed's head...I believe Ed says things like this, not because he believes it, but rather because he is paid.

Way to rally the base, Ed!

Cost of a Camera vs Cost of a Police Officer

I don't see a lot of people blast through red lights, but I regularly see people making rolling right turns on red lights. And using the term "rolling" is giving them them a lot of leeway.

If the municipality had a cop handing out tickets to all of these people, I can hear the uproar "Why Aren't Cops Out Catching REAL Criminals!"

So the municipality uses a red light camera. Instead of the stern lecture from a person in a uniform, the municipality hopes that the price of the fine will "learn um".
