So when does Garmin update the maps? There is one road here that was a dead end but about three years ago was built through to another road. This still shows on the built in map as a dead end. I have only had the unit for three months but I thought that the maps were newer than three years old.

yeh it takes awhile.

Garmin Map Updates
Funny thing is - a new connector bridge near my home with approach ramps was in the V8 maps on my Garmin C580. BUT qwhat got me upset was that an entire huge shopping mall and surrounding businesses are not in the database. I have the MSN Direct (Free for now??) and a movie theater in that mall shows up - but searching for any word in the location name - Mall, , Theater Name, shows nothing - I can see all of the Mall Roads that wander the mall property on the View Map screen but no POI Icons - up the road a pace the Icons for other places show and can be selected to show the named content. This supersized mall was begun about 20 years ago just over a county line to avoid an unpopular county sales tax. Is Garmin Cartography Dept Political and just erased this mall with all of its stores border stores??
I think they were updated
I think they were updated about a year ago. April, 2006. I'm ready for an update though, that's for sure.
i agree
i think we are all ready, maybe garmin need to do releases more than once a year (hint hint)

I Agree Too
The Fairfax County Parkway 7100 (which Jack calls "Failfax County Parkway) now extends to Herndon, VA and Dulles Airport but if you want to go anywhere on the Fairfax County Parkway it has you exit onto I66 and then takes you all over the place when you could continue on 7100 and get there much much faster.
I was told by Garmin
I was told by Garmin that the new maps are out on some new units. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/3716.

Garmin update page
I check the Garmin homepage fairly often for map update info. It looked a little different today. I think the North America v8 NT information is missing? I may be reading a bit far into it, but I hope that means that they're updating that page with new info on v9.
http://www8.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp
I agree - more frequent would be nice...
There is a major road nearby that isn't completed on my maps and its a real pain b/c the Garmin unit always wants to route way out of the way. The road has been completed for years so I don't know why its not in my current 2006 release but I wonder if they'll put it in 2007. Its a real PITA.
V9 is about to be released

I talked to Garmin support today and he said V9 is about to be released...but they no longer honor the 30-day free upgrade. I think it stinks since I just bought my 660 few days ago installed with V8.

V9 release
I ordered my 660 from Costco a few days ago. If I see that V9 comes out and my version is V8, I'll just exchange it at Costco. They have a 90 Day Satisfaction Guarentee.
If your luck is like mine
The V9/2008 or whatever they call them would come out on day 91 or 92 of that 90 day return...

Actually, Costco will not do exchanges. They will give you a full refund and you will have to buy at whatever their current price is(which is now $599).
The good news. This item does not fall in their 90-day guarantee. The 90-day only applies to: Televisions, computers, cameras, camcorders, iPOD / MP3 players and cellular phones (the 660 plays MP3, but it is sold as a GPS unit). This means the unit qualifies under their normal guarantee of "as long as you own it and can show the receipt" as stated below:
Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell, with a full refund. Exceptions: Televisions, computers, cameras, camcorders, iPOD / MP3 players and cellular phones must be returned within 90 days of purchase for a refund.
So be sure to keep your receipt!

Does Garmin allow you to submit changes to maps for consideration. I have a small street that stops as a bikeway for 300 feet before resuming as a street again. I'd like to let them know this.

I have submitted errors using that site few weeks ago and since, I haven't received any updates about it. I was wondering if they usually update the status of those "reports" and if we are normally notified if they accept/refuse a proposition changes.

I've never gotten a confirmation from the ones I submitted, but I wasn't really looking for one either. I have heard of people getting an update, but I would guess that they get so many reports that it would be hard to keep up with all of them. And lots of them are bound to be duplicates of things that others have submitted.

To insure that we have the best maps, all of us need to take an active role in reporting errors and ommissions to Navteq. The new ones probably will not be in the next version (v9)unless they were previously reported in some manner to Navteq. I see many people commenting about missing locations or stores that have been gone for several years. Action (reporting to Navteq) speaks louder than words.

Try taking the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge. About halfway across it says "recalculating" but ends up showing you swimming across the Potomac River.

Reporting
I agree omissions should be reported. However, I have reported streets that are 3+ years old, and, Navteq has never acknowledged receiving my reports, and the maps were never updated. This was prior to version 8. I have heard of other instances of the same in this, and other forums.

Costco nuvi
I got my Nuvi from Costco the other day. It has the 2008 map loaded into it. So I'm good to go!
2008 Maps! How can we tell?
chucklaw, I just checked the costco website for the 660. It does not even say WHAT version it is. Great luck for you. Congrats. Is it better?
How are we supposed to know which version?
I guess you can tell I am waiting for the 680 with the updates...
Is v2008 better?

NAVTEQ Acknowledgement
I sent a correction to NAVTEQ on 6/7 and got an acknowledgement almost immediately from their server with a pretty long explaination of the correction process and the following:
"Map Report submitted on: 2007-06-07 13:38:07.0:
NAVTEQ tracking number: 00529ACWIJ304Y1B
Problem Description: This area is a foot/bicycle access only bridge over a drainage ditch. It is closed to motor vehicles"
My 660 came from Costo ...
Received my 660 from Costco on 6/7, but it does NOT have the new maps - so with Costco it could go either way - unless their warehouse(s) have depleted their 'old map' supply. My luck, I got the last of 'em ...
I'm not a gambler

http://www8.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp
Now all North America info is removed from the Garmin map update page. I'll wait until the new version is posted there before I buy my new unit. I don't want to hope v2008 is on it and then have to fork over the $75 if it isn't!
Garmin map update.
I just spoke with Garmin this morning, and v9 is a couple of months away, they'll send an email update once it's released.
What is the current version
What is the current version of the map called when you look it up in the unit (I'm using a nuvi 360)?
When I go to SETTINGS -> MAP -> MAP INFO, I see:
City Navigator North America NT 2008
[1] ALL
2008 seems like it should be relatively new - does 2008 = v9 or will v9 be called 2009?
I'd be upset if I need to shell out more $ for new maps since I just bought this thing last Wednesday.
Oh, and I got mine from BuyDig.com if anyone is wondering. Ordered 6/13 arrived 6/15.
Upgrade
I will be upgrading. I will be interested in seeing what changes are in my area(East Texas).
new but wanting to learn...Thanks, David K.
Map question
Hi,
After the new map is released and before we decide to purchase, is there any way we can check the map to see if the upgrade is worthwhile? Thanks.
Once it's out
You can go here: http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/ontheRoad/ - and in the upper right side of the page, there is a "MapSource Map Viewer" box, with a drop-down list of available map products - select the City Navigator - North America (Whatever they decide to call it) - and you can see what the map will display - and you can zoom in to your locale and see if something missing in your current version has been added. Or not.

Incremental Updates
I wish Garmin would put out incremental updates along the way throughout the year for major roads. It might not be as difficult as building the yellow pages but it would help those of us using the GPS to get from one address to another.
Maybe that's a weird wish...
That is the new one

So, they can put it on new units but make it sound like nowhere near release to existing customers???

Garmin does an annual
Garmin does an annual release of maps - they update their data by purchasing it from their Geobase supplier and THAT information is originall collected via a drive-through by a fleet of cars with GPS receivers, laptops and geeks with headsets typing and talking into their microphones. Then an army of Chionese slaves integrates the data with phone book information and so on.
Not all that much changes from year to year. If a residential street is built it may not get noticed - however major routes stand a good chance of being included without needing the drive-by surveys.
Units are already being shipped with V9 loaded. The distribution DVDs will be a while yeat so hold onto your britches for a bit longer.
Currently have: SP3, GPSMAP 276c, Nuvi 760T, Nuvi 3790LMT, Zumo 660T

No, it's not a weird wish at all.
If Garmin OR NavTeq would offer some sort of annual subscription to a downloadable database of additons and corrections, I'd be very tempted to pay for a subscription to update as soon as these items were verified and then added to the map database.
Maybe if we all send this request to Garmin and NavTeq our voices would be heard.
BTW.... NavTeq is the company who makes the Maps for Garmin.

Updates
Yes, Garmin reps have indicated they are changing the naming convention, so it goes v8 (last year) to v2008 (this year).
They also confirmed that v2008 is shipping on units as of approx the beginning of June. Soe stores have old stock, some have new.
The DVDs for upgrading always lag behind and it could be several more months to upgrade to v2008.
email update?
Someone mentioned above that garmin sends out an email when the update is available? If I have registered online, I assume I'm included and will get this update for my nuvi 660?
Their website is a bit strangely laid out and not the best way to present information. I agree with whoever mentioned above that on the website they don't even like North America NT version even though it's probably their most popular version.
Recent Purchase
I bought a Nuvi 200 online today. I will find out next week whether the new maps are on it or not. Crossing fingers.

Got a message
I recall getting some sort of a message, either on my garmin or by emial that said my software was now one year old and I should get an update. I recall it said to go to the garmin website. I just can not remember where I got the message at, email or actually on my unit? Anybody else get this?

Great Deal on Maps
Well, yesterday was my lucky day. When I called Garmin to order the updated 2008 maps and ask since I had purchased 2 GPSR from them, 660 and 680, did I have to buy two maps or just one, well they said I had to purchase 2 updated maps at the price of $69.00, I was not happy, the sales lady did say she would ship the new versions 2day delivery for free, so I said go ahead, when she gave me a quote of $84.45, I thought I had gotten ripped off, I am thinking for the price of one, but she said for some reason I am receiving two copies of the updated software, the computer for some reason either gave me a discount or an error, anyway I am receiving two updated copies for that price. However, they are on back order due to running out early yesterday of the copies they had in inventory.

NickJr,
When did oyu purchase your two Garmin Units?
I also have two units.... a 2730 and a 7500.
It's been a year since I bought them and am not thrilled at the thought of having to buy two update DVD either.
I wonder if they will do the same deal for me since I have two units?
Thanks, Tim
