POI Loader Causes Blue Screen and Reboots

Today I decided to upload some new POI files to my Nuvi 3590LMT just to take it for a quick test spin to make sure everything is working properly. I had NOT upgraded to the latest POI Loader and have uploaded POI files in the past with no problem that is until today.

I connected the 3590 to the computer and it is recognized by Windows 7 as I had made the changes soon after I bought the unit. I have done a full backed up the unit a number of times with no problems.

Now I bring up POI loader and get to the first splash welcoming screen. I hit next as usual and that brings me up to the the screen where it asks where you would like to store your POI files. By default Garmin Device is selected and I hit next. The screen pops up with the Find Device and it is only there for a millisecond and I get a blue screen and the computer reboots. On the monitor I get a lot of text and the system reboots so fast I am unable to read any of it. Hummm, what is going on now? I try again and then again and I get the same results, a forced computer blue screen and the computer reboots every time. I have a nunber of USB ports in this computer and I try them all with the same results.

Okay be that way. I go to the Garmin web site and download and install the latest POI Loader. Same results, blue screen and reboot.

So next I move the POI files over to my lap top as I have POI loader installed there also and I am able to load the files with no problem. This rules out a cable or connector issue. Okay I will deal with the desktop when I get back home.

I get back and hook up the 3590 to the desktop and the computer recognizes it again with no problem. I bring up Basecamp and it see the 3590 with no problem so I download today's routes just to make sure things are talking to one another. No problems so far. I then try POI Loader again and it still blue screens and reboots the computer.

Now this really get interesting as this is the second time I have typed this post as I brought up POI Loader to make sure I had the screen terminology correct and as soon as I gotto the Find Device screen the computer blue screened and reboted. The 3590 was not even connected to the computer and I still get a blue screen and reboot by just bringing up the POI Loader program and it always happens on the Find Device screen.

Next I went to the control panel and uninstalled POI Loader. I went back the the Garmin web site and downloaded the latest version again just to make sure I had a different copy. I loaded this version and I still get the same results a blue screen and reboot even if the 3590 is not connected.

Anyone have any ideas on this one?

blue screen

when you click detect device is the usb cable
connected. could be a bad cable , could be an infection of some sort. try downloading "Malwarebytes", install and run a complete or full scan , may take awhile. sometimes windows gets corrupted and has to be reinstalled...good luck

Need Error Code from Blue Screen

There is a free utility that will display what kind of error occurs from the POI Loader blue screen. It will scans the files created during the crash by Windows 7.

Can you run it on your desktop and report back with the code (from the Bug Check Code column)?

Download BlueScreenView from here:

Stan It will blue screen

Stan
It will blue screen without the GPS even being connected to the computer so that rules out the cable. Plus connecting the unit to the lap top works perfectly. Also the GPS is seen by Basecamp with no problem.

I believe your assumption in that Windows may have become corrupt is a good possibility.

Thanks for the link, I will

Thanks for the link, I will give it a try and see I can come up with.

OS

Are both machines using the same operating system?

What uninstall software are you using? Not all uninstall software cleans the registry, if you aren't already using it try "revo uninstaller" to uninstall POI loader.

I am assuming it worked at one time. If so think back to when and do a restore to an earlier date.

You can also boot in the safe mode and do as stan393 suggested.

I have run Malwarebytes in

I have run Malwarebytes in the safe mode and that did not help. The desktop is running Windows 7 Professional while the lap top is using Windows 7 Home edition.

Yes it did work before and I will have to see if I can restore to an earlier date. I will also try Revo Uninstaller as that was also a recommendation from a friend.

From BlueScreen View the

From BlueScreen View the code in the bug check string is SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXECPETION and the Bug check code is 0x0000003b. It also states it is caused by driver SASKUTIL64.SYS. I just did a quick Google search on the bug check code and driver name and I see a number of fixes so I will try there and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the link to the Blue screen program and it is very helpful.

I played around more today

I played around more today and it looks as though the problem is being caused be a 1394 Firewire card that was installed last month. I have pulled the card out and removed it from the device manager. It looks to be a stack issue with the driver now I have to find out how to corrects that. Microsoft has a KB article on just that issue and even offers a hot fix but I keep getting the message that the fix is not for this computer. Oh well.

I have done everything I can

I have done everything I can think of to correct this and it still blue screens. I even replaced the Firewire card with another one and have the same results. Error logs report it as two programs, ntoskrnl.exe and rassstp.sys. Both are system files and cannot be over written. I was able to get a previous version off by home server backup but cannot get it to overlay what is there. It looks like to only other option is to do a recovery from the original CD's but that will wipe out a ton of other program settings. I am now thinking I will just use my lap top load the POI's and Windows 8 will be out in a few weeks so a new computer is on the horizon.

Macrium Reflect

If you aren't already familiar with the program you should look into the free program Macrium Reflect. When everything is working good you use it to image your hard drive to an external storage device then have it make a bootable rescue disk. I rerun the program whenever I make changes to the computer. So far it has saved me on two different computers.

+1 JUST DO IT TODAY

Free Macrium Reflect and less than 100 bucks for an external drive is something that anyone who does not already have a formal backup regimen should do TODAY.

1. Install Macrium Reflect
2. Make an "image" of your hard drive over on an external drive when things are going good
3. Store that external drive someplace safe from a fire at your house (put the external drive at another location of invest in a fireproof safe for your house)
4. Repeat the image every month.

Then, should you be infected with a virus or have a hard drive crash, you can get back to the date of your last image.

BSD Issue Resolved

When I went to update the maps in my 3590 yesterday on my desktop computer I again was greeted with a blue screen core dump and computer reboot as soon as I hit the button to fine the device. Same issue that I was dealing with using POI Loader. Okay I have my lap top but the desktop is where I do all my playing around so I wanted everything working there.

I started searching the web and found a free program called WhoCrashed. I downloaded the program and ran it and it pointed to a program that I use to create virtual com ports for ham radio use. Now we are getting somewhere. I went into the control panel and disabled all the ports created by this program and rebooted the computer. I then tried POI Loader and it worked as advertised. Same goes for Lifetime updater. So now I know the cause and can look for a solution.

Next I went and checked a few old e-mails to see what others are using and found another free program that I downloaded and tried. It is only 32 bit but it worked properly and no blue screen and reboot.

I will be getting the 64 bit version ($24.00) tomorrow first thing.
