Before making a purchase I'd like to confirm the options for adding traffic to the Nuvi 255.
From my research it looks like step 1 (below) is the basic requirement and from there I have options.
1> Buy Garmin GTM35 - comes w/lifetime sub to NAVTEQ and includes AD's.
2> Purchase optional NAVTEQ premium lifetime subscription.
3> Purchase optional CLEAR CHANNEL premium lifetime subscription.
4> Purchase optional NAVTEQ and CLEAR CHANNEL premium lifetime subscriptions.
It seems that both the free and paid traffic options are tied to a single unit. Is that unit the cord or GPS?
Subscriptions Tied to the cord and not to one specific GPS unit
Tied to the cord so the cord will work with any Garmin that is compatible with the GTM35.
Compatible products for GTM35 cord are:

If you buy the cord from Garmin, it comes with lifetime traffic but NO ads. I bought one of the replacements for my 885 after the Microsoft program ended.
2> Purchase optional NAVTEQ premium lifetime subscription.
I think this is the upgrade from free ad supported traffic to no ads.
3> Purchase optional CLEAR CHANNEL premium lifetime subscription.
This adds the second service to an exiting receiver. It has no ads.
4> Purchase optional NAVTEQ and CLEAR CHANNEL premium lifetime subscriptions.
If you buy the GTM-35 it comes with NavTeq so you only need to add Clear Channel if desired. The options are for the ad supported device packed with many units.
It seems that both the free and paid traffic options are tied to a single unit. Is that unit the cord or GPS?
It's the cord that is registered so it can move from compatible unit to compatible unit.

And to add: The GTM-25
And to add: The GTM-25 cable/receiver that came with my 255 is fully compatible with my 2595 and provides the same 3D Digital traffic features to the unit
as the GTM-35 cord/receiver that came with it. I use the GTM-25 because I have both a Navteq and optional Clear-Channel subscription tied to it. BTW, the GTM-35 works fine with the 255 as well and provides Navteq traffic service to the unit when connected.

New question
So if I buy one from a 3rd party vendor such as Amazon (rather than direct from Garmin) your saying it could be an AD supported version?
It's my understanding that the AD supported models were not available for retail sale, only included with a GPS. Is that correct?
correct
The ad supported units come packed with a GPS. The retail cords are ad free. And I did buy mine from Amazin.

By George!
I got it, thanks to everyone for all the help!

Ordered on the 11'th arrived today
After the initial scare of "unsupported accessory" I updated my Nuvi and now it's showing NAVTEQ Traffic as Lifetime.
My home town is not quite big enough to hit the map, but Thursday on my trip to Philly I will get a chance to see how well it works. (That gives me a few days to learn how to use it
