Anyone tried navfree?

Just

Just one note - the link you have used is for Navfree which only provides maps of Europe. For maps of US states and Canada you need to install Navfree USA on your andriod device. For the NA maps use:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.navfree.an....

I haven't really tried it yet but note, it uses OpenStreetMap.org maps, which is fine, but you need to to download each state individually so that maybe a bit of a bummer.

Navfree USA

I have it on my Dell Streak. The way I look at it is as a replacement for Garmin Mobile XT. In other words, good as a backup.

Pros:
*Free
*No annoying "recalculating" message whenever going off route.
*Maps are stored on the device.
*Spoken street names (but not destinations)
*Multiple route types (Fastest, Easy, Economical, Shortest)
*Safety camera database included, with voice alert.

Neutral
*Maps are from Openstreetmap. While more frequently updated than Garmin, Openstreetmap has some downsides.
*No lane assist or junction view. The app does display the upcoming turn however.
*No speed limit indicator.

Cons:
*Avoidances are limited to avoiding toll roads and motorways.
*Downloading maps for the entire US is an inconvenience, as you must download every state individually.
*Maps require a large amount of storage. Based on my last usage of Openstreetmap maps, North America took 5GB of storage.
*Requires a data connection to search by POI type and by house number, as that information is not included in the maps.
*No custom POI support (as far as I can tell).

At this point in time it's not going to replace a dedicated GPS, but only because it doesn't include some of the features we may be used to, such as lane assist, and junction views. However, the device routes rather well and it will do the job. Its biggest drawback is the reliance on the data connection in order to route to specific addresses or POIs. The data connection does mitigate Openstreetmap's lack of address support in the maps themselves, but it can be a nuisance if one doesn't have a data plan - e.g. an old Android smartphone being used strictly as a GPS.

Download large chunks of OSM data here

You can download sections of North America in varying sizes, listed by file size and lat/long range:
http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/latest/

For other locations and info, see this page:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Downloa...

I find that the OSM data is often significantly more detailed than the Garmin map data, especially when you're off the beaten path. The general inability to look up an address by street number is a pain, however.

Glad someone else found this. I've noticed this as well and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. rolleyes

I had many problems

I had many problems downloading the maps state by state.

The solution I found was to download one state, then completely exit the NavFree application before trying to download another state.

I think I will add it onto

I think I will add it onto my android phone. Thanks for the reminder, I had seen this before when I had a BB but didn't have it in my list to grab.

I have only tried copilot

I have only tried copilot and navfree world, and am reasonable happy with copilot but it is not as full featured as my Garmin unit and the navfree world I havent tried yet but guess it will do as a back up, since I currently dont have any other european maps .

I have tried it, didn't like

I have tried it, didn't like it and uninstalled it. WAZE and Mapquest are pretty good but neither have replaced my Garmin.

Point of Clarification

I updated my original post to reflect this, but Navfree does speak street names. However, the destination is a different story. Not only does Navfree not speak the destination name (if a POI) or address, it does not tell you what side of the street the destination is on.

Not quite true

The general version of Navfree can add US maps, but there is a trick; it can't be done during installation. Install any map from the default set during the installation, complete the install, and close the app. Reopen the app and go to Upgrades. You can now add US states.

Thread Necromancy

This thread is two years old. Who in the heck are you talking to anyway? You didn't specify.

I tried it briefly but found

I tried it briefly but found that I preferred Co- Pilot and Garmin Viago much better.

Still have it

I still have it on my Dell, but the Dell is no longer my primary device. On my Galaxy S4 I'm running a copy of Garmin StreetPilot extracted from an Asus Padfone, as mentioned here, but a much later version.

Not 4 Me

I tried it and did not like it at all. I found it hard to use and their customer service is horrible. They have been working on identified problems for years and do not respond to emails.
