BaseCamp and Garmin Nuvi650

It has been my understanding that the Garmin Nuvi650 cannot show way-points (route). I have been experimenting with BaseCamp and was able to successfully upload a test way-point onto the Nuvi650.

However, when it came to a route ( a series of way-points) developed through BaseCamp, I could not find it using the Nuvi650 screen selections. I does show up as GPX file on the Nuvi650 when I use the computer's file management program. So I am assuming that the Nuvi650 cannot display a route created by using BaseCamp. Is that assumption correct?

Problems With BaseCamp and Compatibility With Routes

Yeah, something like that. And it is not just a specific device model. Big problems with routes and route compatibility and route corruption, such that the device can no longer use the route as intended.

If you create and keep a route on your device with never letting BaseCamp touch it, you should be okay.

Once BaseCamp touches a route created on the device, or a route created on BaseCamp, that route will not behave/work the same as if it was created on and exclusively managed on the device.

I have been working with Garmin on this very serious problem for a couple months. They have been pretty good and fixed few other things, but this and a couple other problems remain.

If I create a route on the device, all is well. If that route is touched by BaseCamp, the route is no longer editable or reversible on the device. That is a huge flaw, especially since all documentation, device and BaseCamp, says that routes are to be editable, reversible, created, and managed in BaseCamp. I change routes on the fly and if BaseCamp touched a route, I can't change it, it is frozen. Not good at all.

Do a test... create a route on the device and play around with it, edit it, etc. Don't let BaseCamp near it. Then create a route on BaseCamp and transfer it to your device with BaseCamp. It probably won't work or be seriously hobbled. The behavior and options to work with the routes will probably be very different.

When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is only difficult for the others. It is the same when you are stupid.

the 650 doesn't support routes

According to the Garmin web page, the 650 doesn't support routes. The best you are going to do is get a list of way points and navigate between them.

Pretty much what I was expecting. At least I can send individual way-points from BaseCamp to the Nuvi to "build" the trip we are planning.
