How to erase POI category on Nuvi 3580LTM

Hi guys,

Hoping someone can assist as I am having trouble with my new Nuvi 3580LTM.

I loaded my existing POI files onto my 3580 through POI LOADER same as I have always done on my previous Nuvi's. Afterwards I decided to remove a file as I did not need it any longer, so I re-uploaded the POI files (minus the 1 I erased off my computer hard drive) onto the unit. The problen is the POI file I removed is still on the Nuvi, so I removed Poi's through the poi loader program and reloaded again, no success the old poi file still exists.

I know when I removed it through POI loader it removed the file on my Nuvi, see it go back in but the same same size file.

Any idea's guys, I just want to get rid of 1 catagory on my Custom POi's and this thing isn't allowing me to do it. I have loaded about 8 custom poi's in total, all in their separate subdirectories of the main. Just cannot erase the 1 custom poi of the 8 in total, reloading the 7 or removing and reloading the 7 does not fix it on my Nuvi.I have erased the 1 file and sub directory off my hard drive so it isn't being transferred.

Thanks for any help.

Two thoughts

Two thoughts:
1. After deleting your POI file with POILoader, use Windows Explorer to confirm it's really gone. If it's not, use Explorer to delete from your 3580.

2. If your unwanted file magically reappears after reloading your POI's, then you're not loading the POI file that you think you are. Make sure POILoader is pointing to the correct POI file. It's gotta work.

Removing POI

As suggested by Plunder.

I use POI loader to insert the files into my 3790. But to delete a POI file I do not want any longer I go via Internet Explorer. Plug the GPS into the PC.
Then find the folder "Garmin Nuvi\ Garmin\ POI\ and there I delete the file I no longer want. Of course that is assuming a PC computer, no idea what you do in a MAC.

POI Loader always loads "Custom POI" files into the [device]:\Garmin\POI folder with a .gpi extension. You may find an extra .gpi file that an update has put there, but the others you should recognize.

The old POILoader program always created a "poi.gpi" file. The new POI LOader lets you name the .gpi file it creates (defaulting to the name of the folder you point it to). So, you should be able to use Windows Explorer (as mentioned in above posts) and see what is there.

You can delete files using Windows Explorer or POI LOader has an options to delete ALL Custom POIs on the unit.

I think the best thing to do is to delete all the existing custom POI files and reload what you do want.

Thank you so much from

Thank you so much from everyone who posted, and a special thank you to Plunder as he got me on track quickly.

As I deleted the POI file from the Nuvi using my PC, Plunder was correct in that the extra poi file was being put back every time I loaded the points of interest files from my hard drive. I looked through all my subdirectories and found the extra file, so I erased that particular poi file and uploaded again and all is right in my world.

I then took out the sub directories for my Poi's as it just gave me another menu on my garmin, so I have my unit exactly where I need it to be.

Thanks to everyone in the Poi Factory community *wink*!
