Garmin Nuvi 1490 LMT mileage search numbers inaccurate?

When I do a search for locations..the mileage that is listed next to each location's name is not the total mileage to get there from my current location(its always less).. What is the mileage number actually referring to?

As the crow flies

It is shown as a straight line distance till you actually have it calculate a route.

EDIT: Welcome to the poi factory. You will enjoy your stay.

straight line

The distance is "as the crow flies". Once you tell the unit to "Go" somewhere, the distance show will be the calculated driving distance.

Welcome

Welcome to the site.

Since you are new, you may want to do a couple of the Beginner Exercises.

To make it easy, when you click on the first link below, hold down the "Cntl" key as you left-click. That will open a new "Tab" in your browser in the "Tab" bar. Click on that 'Tab" to do the first exercise - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

The first link makes sure settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

This next link helps you get a backup by attaching your GPS to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup)

Think about the "as the crow flies" distance for a moment. Doing a calculation of the distance between two sets of coordinates is a mathematical exercise. Calculating the road mileage between two points involves considerable work based on preferences, etc. Thinking about how long it takes your unit to calculate a route once you do a "GO", you would really not want to wait for the unit to do 50, would you?

Thank you everyone!

Thank you everyone!

What is important to understand is that the GPS shows you "as the crow flies" when presenting you with possible destinations. It has not actually calculated "routes" to those locations. For example, if you are on one side of a river and your locations are on the other side of the river (such that you could see them), the route to one of them might be 30 miles or more.

Once the GPS calculates a route, it will have taken into account all of your preferences (say, ferries or toll roads) and created a preferred route.

GoogleMaps will usually give you several options when you ask for directions - none of them are straight line because it works on roads. But one of the options might include a ferry.

But note that GoogleMaps is doing "routing" not presenting you a list of all the nearby McDonalds.
