3590 vs Mapsource

I've been registering & setting up a new 3590LMT w/no glitches until I tried to download some routes to it from Mapsource.

My Mapsource v6.16.3 can't find it. I've downloaded the latest USB drivers along with the Garmin Communicator program but to no avail. Mapsource recognizes and communicates with my 850 and Quest units just fine, but I can't get it to connect with the 3590.

I know Garmin has switched to Basecamp and seems to be trying to get rid of Mapsource completely. I'm fearing that they are intentionally not permitting the 3590/Mapsource interface for that reason. Does anybody know of a way that I can connect my 3590 to Mapsource? If not, I'm going to return my 3590 to Best Buy. Basecamp SUX!

Does your computer see the 3590?

Does your computer see the 3590? The 3590 is a model that has MTP:

If your computer doesn't see the nuvi, then no software will either. But a switch to Mass Storage (MS) mode should resolve things for you:

Something Strange at Garmin

Here is something strange.....I was on the Garmin site today and was looking at maps for my nuvi 3590 for a trip to Europe. Lo and belhold I found an item called "Trip and Waypoint Manager" for $29.99. The description is as follows:

Plan Your Travels

This computer software allows you to transfer waypoints, routes and tracks between your Garmin device and your computer. It is my understanding that Garmin's Trips and Waypoint Manager is simply a Mapsource provided on DVD and bundled in a retail package with a worldwide base map. I don't think you will get anything useful that the free Mapsource doesn't already have.

What I mean is.....

What I am trying to say is that they are now selling it for the 3590. But they are also stating that they are not supporting it anymore and are supporting BaseCamp instead, and also are not providing Mapsource free anymore.

Mapsource is Still Free

Mapsource is still free and available from the Garmin Website, see http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

The problem is that you need a map on your computer in order for it to work.

Here is a site that explains the issue and how to get and install Mapsource so it will work on your computer:

http://openmtbmap.org/tutorials/install-mapsource/

NOTE - you can use free maps from a site like http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ instead of the ones from openmtbmap.org

One other way is when you update your maps, select "Install on your GPS AND YOUR COMPUTER. Once the update is complete just install Mapsource from the file downloaded from Garmin and noted above. Mapsource will automatically find the maps on your computer if you've used the default storage location.

Installing Mapsource

My god do they ever make it awkward to install Mapsource on your computer even if you do not have it on a CD.

On your C:\ drive in the "Program" folder create a folder "Garmin" into it copy any small file of your choice. Then rename that file " MapSource.exe"

Now download Mapsource from Garmin and then install it and it will install into the folder you just created.

I do not know anything about the 3590, but with my 3790 Mapsource can not transfer a route to the GPS anymore.

With

With the 3790, you can transfer routes from Mapsource. They will end up in Trip Planner of course. Just sent one to my 3790 about 30 seconds ago, works fine.

I'd suspect the 3590 would work just the same.

Good tip about installing Mapsource, I thought there was an easier way but couldn't remember how it worked. redface Of course, it isn't much use to anyone to have Mapsource installed unless they have a map on their computer for the software to use.

We haven't heard anything from the OP.

Hopefully RuffRider followed CraigW's advice about the MTP setting and is happily using Mapsource with his 3590.

Yes, alandb, I did follow his advice and it was quite successful. Thank you, CraigW for the solution to my problem. I can now download routes & waypoints from Mapsource as well as upload tracks from trips for future reference. I'm now happy camper with my 3590.
