Questions on files that can be removed to create space for Map Update

Nuvi 660 Presently has latest Map Update.

Presently have 150Mb free...

I wanted to ask about files that can be deleted to save space... In preparation for the next Map Update...

I've already deleted all Pictures but one we added. The one we added was renamed such that it becomes the default startup picture, instead of Garmin Logo. Can the Garmin Logo pix be deleted if I've pointed another to be used instead?

We've removed all music files except one with very strange name. We have music on SD card.

I am presently using a custom vehicle (Multi-colored bi-plane), but it's name is not obvious... Once I determine the correct name is, can I delete the other vehicles, or is there some that must remain?

I see a TON of small Help files, in multiple languages..... Can I delete all languages but English?

I use an edited version of American Jack. I put a copy of the original American Jack in the root directory in case it gets corrupted by editing..
Call all other voice files be deleted?

Thanks for your comments...

Thanks

Thank You... Obviously, no, I hadn't! smile!

And pwohlrab.... I contacted someone with an old 660 with a dead battery.... last night He charged it up enough to get directory display, and he tells me he has a lot of files and directories in his gpx directory, too... so maybe this is normal?

Probably not

Probably not unless the other person has a corrupted file system as well. From what you've posted in http://www.poi-factory.com/node/37189 it really looks like you have more issues than deleting files will solve.

I do not believe it is normal. Even my 1350 does not have all those files.

The gpx folder for the GPS.If you used send favorites by Google to GPS feature plus similar programs.it creates a file along side of current.gpx Once booted up that file is loaded into current.gpx and is no longer needed. After a while you need to clean the extra files out.

Deleting files

Ever since I had a Nuvi 350 and found that I needed more space to free up memory I have deleted any files I had no use for.

BUT BEFORE DOING THAT, I copied the complete filesystem of the GPS to my hard drive including hidden files. This way I could completely restore the GPS.

Since I have no use for Swahili etc, I remove all help files but English. I removed all car icons except the one I use. As far as I am concerned, I have a great stereo system in my car, why would I want to listen to music on the crappy GPS speaker. I also have no use for any free audio book trials. All and any pictures are removed with the exception of the start up picture. I also remove any keyboard files except English.

You should also be able to remove the trial translation program. I do not since I have the registered version.

Any MP3, Audio book etc folders you empty will not remove the icon pointing to the program. The icon will just point you to an empty directory.

You must examine what you delete before you do, some such as languages need the deletion of two complimenting files.

The GPS is a small computer and has a limited memory capacity. I would rather have the best map in the highest detail displayed on the screen than to have any unnecessary files.

The GPS is to take me from point A to point B, it is not an entertainment system to me.

Recycle Bin?

What is the reason to empty the recycle bin as noted in the FAQ? Isn't the recycle bin on the PC? When I try to delete a file from my Garmin it asks if I want to permanently delete it, not to add it to the recycle bin.

I think the recycle bin issue is more a Mac issue, not a PC issue--something like files aren't removed from the GPS until the Mac Trash Bin is emptied. Don't ask me any more--I'm a PC person.
