how accurate are the garmin " where are you" files?

Just bought a garmin 1490. have had a lorance gps, navigon gps, and magellan gps.
of all 4 brands only the magellan gps when asked "Where is the closes police to my home location" came back with correct location.

all other brands come back with the same answer wich is 17 miles and further.
none of the local police depts. come up.
does anyone have an answer to this and who can correct it.

thanks george

Mine are fine

My '40 shows the nearest at 7 miles, which is correct.

All of my Nuvi's show the correct location of the nearest Police station from my home. It's really a matter of how up to date and accurate the built in POI map data is, as to whether this feature will display the correct station in your location.

You can check out the if your Nuvi actually has the station nearest you in it's database by going to Where To - Points of Interest - Community - Police Station. If the one your looking for isn't there you can report it directly to the map makers, Navteq, through the Map Reporter on Navteq.com.

Check navtec first. If it is not on there, tell them.

If it is, tell Garmin

POI data base.

It has been discussed here before. The built-in POI data base is not comprehensive. It does not include ALL businesses, attractions, community services, etc. If I reacall the numbers correctly, I read somewhere that Garmin includes between 6 and 7 million POI's in their data base out of an estimated potential total of over 25 million. I don't remember where I read those numbers ... maybe someone has a link. Only Garmin knows where they get the data and what criteria they use to select the POI's to be included.

That's not a high percentage. Space for data? What they think is most important? Interesting.

Mine too

I can see the sheriff's office. The city police is 10 blocks away. All three of my units show nearest is 20 miles away.

Perhaps

Perhaps it is showing you the main HQ police station in your jurisdiction?
