Preorder

Amazon still lists them as not released, pre-order. So I doubt that anyone has one yet unless they are in a beta test group.

Will 3790t firmware be upgraded with the new 3490-like features?

Any reason you think it wouldn't?

Yes

erweb wrote:

Yes, there is a very good reason why this will never happen. Garmin rarely, if ever, provides older Nuvi models with features that appear on newer units.

I bought it at Costco. It is still returnable... Are the new features worth it though?

Received an email from Amazon saying the 3490 is being released on the 5th and I will have it on the 6th of October.

No Joy

Awoke to find that my delivery date had slipped to mid november, January date range. Just canceled the order.

A member

A member from the US at gpspassion.com just reported that his 3490 arrived on October 3rd, directly from Garmin. Using it side by side with a 3790, sounds like he has seen some obvious flaws so far.

3490 LMT - great so far

I bought my 3490 LMT this week and it's a lot nicer than my 3790 LMT. The menu have all changed and so have the screens. I'm headed to Phoenix this weekend so I'll post a thorough review when I return.

Great unit so far.

I bought my at ABT.COM.

Sure

Traffic Service

How reliable is the traffic service on these models?

Canceled the amazon order

Canceled the amazon order and ordered from GPS city. Should be here by 10:30 am tomorrow.

3490 is the best.
menus are upgraded and more graphical, traffic is much better; it even pops on the top of the screen to tell you how far the traffic is. it gives you multiple routes. Finally they show which direction you are headed. they stopped saying "recalculating". I'll post more as I use it more.

No more "Recalculating"?

Do you mean if your are following a route and stop at a rest stop, for example, it won't automatically recalculate? My 3790T does that and that is the most annoying thing about the Nuvis IMO.

Thanks,
David

Biggest surprise, you can now avoid roads on your route.

Thanks gadget_man. If you do go off track, does the 3490 actually recalculate but just doesn't announce it?

better gps acquisition at least much better than my 3790.
You now have a "route button that shows you your route on a map with time, distance, and traffic before you hit the "go" button.

New Nuvi's 3450 & 3490

Based on the review in the link showing a comparison between the 3790 and the 3490. the level of details and Streetshas been "backed down" once again to an unacceptable level.

I had purchased a 3790 because of the increased details level(details level like the Garmisn used to have)but I returned it when the 3490 was announced the same week.

I assumed the new 3490 would not only have the new features, but maintain the old features that the 3790 had, particualarly the greater detail level.

Now that the detail level has been degraded, I am no longer interested in it and wish I had kept the 3790.

worth the upgrade

Pratzert;

I understand your frustration with the map detail and everyone is entitle to their reasons for liking and disliking a PND. But, the extra features and other enhancements that Garmin had made has me LOVE the 3490 over my 3790 a whole lot. Personally I don't care about map detail as long as the unit takes me from point A to point B reliably. For me, this unit was worth the upgrade from a 3790. There were plenty of new features plus of the new menu and the dashboard feature lets your tailor your screen views from a choice of about 5.

3490LMT Memory?

I can't find it in the specifications anywhere. Can one of the new owners please tell me the internal memory size in the 3490LMT?

I did find it interesting that the new models do not have Garmin Lock. Must be too easy for the thieves to get around this feature.

Thanks,
Terry

After adding city explorer

After adding city explorer map of washington dc a 35 meg download it said I had 2.65 gigs memory remaining on my 3490 lmt. So I guess that it probably has 8 megs of memory.

Compatibility with Mapsource?

Will the 34xx units accept a route downloaded from Mapsource or Basecamp?

More PRO's for the new

More PRO's for the new 3490:

Traffic is more descriptive; pop-up messages show on the screen whether its, an accident, construction or just a backup. It also countdowns the miles to the event.

My personal POI's are seen on the screen as flags.
The red light camera message pops up across the top of the screen

When you reach your destination a Parking icon pops asking if you would like to find parking.

all your previous searches are shown across the top of the screen as tabs.

CONS:

The recalculations are not that much faster.

The AVOID ROAD feature is not that easy to use

more to come...

8gb memory, thanks

I appreciate the reply. I have a 3760 and when I updated the maps last time it indicated I did not have room on the internal memory to load the entire lower 48. However when I settled for the southwest 48, it appears I still have about 1.5gb internal memory not being used. Somehow this doesn't make sense. I also had choices what I could load and now I have no idea how to get back to that option.

Terry

Another great feature that

Another great feature that the 3490 has: Here in the Chicago area the 3790 only displayed traffic on highways but now the 3490 shows, and warns you of traffic on major streets. A nice improvement!

Can you confirm?

Icons

Does anyone know the size of icons the 3490 can take? I transferred my POIs form my 3970 and they are very small. They show up, but are small.

Thanks,

David

According to POILoader

Your Garmin GPS device may have image size requirements. Most compatible Garmin products work well with icons that are 24x24 pixels or smaller. Bitmaps that do not meet those requirements may appear distorted when viewed on the unit's screen.

Thanks

24x24 is what I have. I guess the high resolution of the screen makes the icons small.

Does the traffic on 3490 has pop-up ads?

Philip.wood

How is it working for you? Most specifically how is traffic and the map detail?

Pop up adds

I asked that question of Garmin. Allegedly there are no adds. The 24xx and 25xx models do have adds.

From my observations, the principle issue with the 3490 is that it has very limited traffic coverage, but in places where traffic is covered it is more up to date than with other traffic reporting GPS's.

When I bought my 1490T I purchased a subscription because I found the adds on the "free" service unacceptable. (There is no such thing as "free".)

Overall I like it. The maps are good, and the traffic is better. I now know what's going on where I live (the Sacramento area) on a lot of regular streets instead of just the highway. It is slow to to catch up though - in that I mean it'll tell me there's something up ahead, but it will have been cleared and traffic moving along like nothing happened. It's not perfect, but a big improvement, and traffic is my main reason for getting this unit. I don't have any problems with the maps. Finding an address is more accurate instead of taking me half way around the block and passing it up, so something has been fixed there. Not with all addresses, but with a lot of them. My house, for example, is where's it's supposed to be now and not around the corner.

The only real complaint I have about it are the map layers function where it let's you see what's coming up along the road. I wish there was a way to disable it while being able to only see the POIs I load into the device. Personally, I don't care about it telling me that there are places coming up in on the road, such as certain restaurants or banks or other places of business I don't do business with. It kind of creates a visual distraction on the screen, and the only way to turn it off is to disable the layer, which also makes it so you can't see your own POI icons either. The concept is a good idea, but it needs a little more work.

I noticed that your post is about a year old. Had you known now what you didn't know then, would you still have purchased a 3490?

Just curious... thinking about upgrading my now 5-some year old nuvi to something with more/better features.

Took my 2455 LTM into Chch today

Took my 2455 into Chch today, (I know I was interested the flasher ones) and as you know the earth quake played havoc with the city and many roads are still closed, and whole sections of the city are still completely close and still unsafe. Well the nuvi did well it avoided all the closed streets, it showed which streets were closed, it showed all the road works, roads that were reduced to one lane, it took detours. Well done , I love the traffic part of the nuvi, its great, worked well.
