POI loader problems

I'm a confused newbie here after owning 5 previous Garmin products. I'm now the unhappy owner of a nuvi 50. I just used POILoader for the first time and downloaded 1 file. After completing the download I've lost all of the factory installed POIs! I must have done something wrong. Is there a way to recover my lost POIs short of trashing this unit and starting over, probably with a different manufacturer?
PS: I did not add a memory chip since the unit seemed to have sufficient unused memory to handle this very small file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Are you sure?
Factory POI and Custom or downloaded POI are 2 different databases. The factory ones are part of the map information and the downloaded POI are listed under Extras and Custom POI. If you are searching for a location, you get to search one or the other not both as they are in different places on the unit. As long as you have the current map data, you should have both sets of POI.

Agreed
I agree with Box Car.
What's odd to me is that built-in and Custom POIs are not handled differently with the nuvi 50 than with earlier nuvi models:
-to access built-in POIs, tap Where to, then tap Points of Interest.
-to access Custom POIs (those loaded with POI Loader), tap Where to, then tap Extras, then tap Custom POIs.
Backup to avoid the horror of losing

As mentioned above, I do not think you have lost anything. It is all still there. If you have really lost built in POIs you would have lost your map itself - which you do not mention.
To get to Custom POIs, you may be missing the step which requires you to touch both the Where To? AND the [down arrow] in order to see Extras.
Having said all that:
Welcome to the site.
Since you are new, you may want to do a couple of the Beginner Exercises.
To make it easy, when you click on the first link below, hold down the "Cntl" key as you left-click. That will open a new "Tab" in your browser in the "Tab" bar. Click on that 'Tab" to do the first exercise - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.
The first link makes sure settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

This next link helps you get a backup by attaching your GPS to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup)

POI Loader Problems
Thanks to all of you for your assistance. I may have failed to accurately explain my problem...here hopefully is clarification: After downloading the one Custom POI file (a csv file), I can access the individual entries in that file,(via "Extras") and the unit will route to those locations with fully functioning map. So far, so good! What I CAN'T access are the original POI folders and locations, e.g. "Food and Drink" "Fuel" "Shopping", etc. In the case of selecting any of the above all I get is message "No matches found" Even if I spell the name of a major chain store (e.g.)"Safeway" I receive the same message. It seems that in the process of loading the custom POI file I inadvertently erased all of the factory POIs. Not Good! In looking at the current files existing in the unit I find a folder "POI". When I open this folder it shows both the name of the custom POI file I downloaded together with a file entitled "USCanadaCyclopsSample.gpi. This file contains 267KB and shows date modified "7/6/2011". could this file contain my missing factory POIs? If so, how can I restore the ability to access them? If not how could I retrieve them from Garmin?
PS: I have downloaded and installed the new updated map 2013-10.
also a question...when an updated map is made available does the download for it contain new/revised factory POIs? If not are the factory POIs ever updated/revised or are we stuck permanently with the same POIs loaded at the time of purchase?
Thanks for your help.

POI loader
Each time you run POI loader, it will overwrite whatever file you previously had in there (unless you renamed it). The way to do it would be to reinstall ALL of the POIs you want on your device, not just the latest.

POI Loader has no effect on the built in POI's
Updating the custom POI's with POI Loader has no effect on the built in POI's that come with the map. You cannot add or subtract locations from the built in POI file.
On my 3790LMT it will allow me to eliminate a location that is no longer valid in future searches and change a phone number that is incorrect in the built in POI database but not add one or erase any.

Just so I understand, what happens when you do
Where To? > Points of Interest > Fuel?
Does a list of the 50 closest gas stations appear?
Or do you get a "No matches found" message

jroho,
The USCanadaCyclopsSample.gpi file you mention is the Garmin-supplied redlight camera POI file, not the built-in POIs.
Remember that Custom POIs and Built-in POIs are found using a different technique. To search for any Built-in POI, tap Whereto>PointsOfInterest, then select the subset you want. Built-in POIs are not found with Whereto>Extras.
If you have no selections available for built-in POIs; i.e., tapping Whereto>PointsOfInterset and seeing nothing, then you may have your City Navigator map unselected. Go to your MapInfo page and see if City Navigator is there and that it is checked.
Regarding your PS: Rest assured, the built-in POIs are updated along with the actual map with each quarterly map update of City Navigator.
@jroho
Be careful when (and if) you ask poi loader to delete "all" pois because it will delete the USCanadaCyclopsSample.gpi
It has happened a few times already.

POILoader problems
Halleluiah! Checking the MapInfo page revealed the City Navigator was indeed not checked. Thanks so much for your advice and clues and thanks to all the other folks who chimed in. Not only fixing my unit's problem but I learned a lot in the process.
Mucho Gracias, Jroho
That is what we like to hear

And thanks for letting us know.

Whew. With City Navigator unchecked, you'd also be unable to create a route to anywhere and the map you were seeing was the very minimal BaseMap.
That's great to hear all is well--for all we know, 2013.20 will be out before you know it and we'll all have our next map update to keep us busy.
PS--I overlooked this before, but welcome to The Factory.
Thanks again, Craig
