Loading maps onto an SD card

I own a Nuvi 680 na and had purchased the lifetime map updates for North America. The most recent map update for all of North America exceeded the internal memory available.

I discovered that it is possible to load maps on the internal memory and the SD card. When I updated the maps to the 680 internal memory from the Garmin website I chose the northeast subset. At the same time, I also downloaded the complete North American map set with the map installer onto my PC. Using the Garmin Mapinstall program, the remaining portion of the maps were placed on the SD card. The SD card was attached to the PC using a standard card reader while the Nuvi was offline. I wanted to be sure the second set of maps could only be loaded on the SD card. I suspect that this is not necessary, but I was being cautious. The Garmin started as usual loading all the maps. When I went into settings (wrench icon)> map> Map Info both sets of maps were listed seperately. The GPS works using both sets of maps seamlessly.

extra languages (after backing all your file up.
that should free up enough internal memory to have the new map install.

Still shy

I eliminated the stock jpgs, mp3s and checked the language files. Available space on the old Nuvi 680 is still shy.

voices too

Some of the largest space wasters are unused voice files.
