Nuvi problem--better route

My Nuvi suggests that there is a better route is available, this is cool and all, but it does it so late. Basically it directs you the way it wants you to go and basically if I hadn't known the area I would get on the ramp/exit and then it would say "A better route is available" isn't there a way to make it say that at least a mile early? Irritated me--If I really didn't know where I was going then I would be screwed--I mean it would get me there, but it would be a longer route.
