I am using a Garmin Nuvi 350 in my vehicle. Rather than use the regular 12 volt car cord I have been using a USB cord. Does anybody happen to know how many amps I need when I use 5 volt USB power?
My Nuvi 350
Car charger output 4.9-5.2v @ 1.0a
Wall charge output 5.0v @ 1.0a
I have non-oem car charger 5.0v @ 1.0a but have never needed to use it with my unit.

Thank you very much for the reply. I have been using the 2.1 amp port of a TomTom High Speed Multi-Charger and I just wanted to make sure it offers enough power for the 350. I do also have it running NMEA data out on GTRANS Garmin to NMEA Translator Cable. http://www.argentdata.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufactu... While I can't imagine it is drawing all that much more current, I suspect it is drawing some additional current.

All devices designed to be powered by a computer's USB port will draw less than 0.5 amp. That is the maximum a computer will supply per port.
Garmin USB Charger Power Requirements/Replacing battery
Gang:
I made my own 12 volt to 5 volt charger cords using a 7805 3 pin regulator (I am a retired electronics tech.). I found that the 1.5 amp regulator is overheating. I suspect that a bad battery is the root cause of this. The Garmin batteries don't last much over a couple of years. They ARE replacable, and can be found on E-Bay and other internet sources. The case screws are usually hidden under stick-on labels.
