using nuvi 500 trip computer

I am new to the GPS world- I have this Nuvi 500 for a few years but having recently retired I would like to know more- Now my trip computer- when I stop my car it resets(?) the milage goes to zero- How can I keep it going when I stop? I did NOT have the GPS pluged into my vehicle- ALSO how can I retrieve my info from my trip? please help as I am planing a trip soon and this info would really help- Thanks in advance

If you don't have a set of manuals for your unit, I would start here and download the Owner's Manual (not the Quick Start).

Then, I would look through the FAQs on this site and do the recommended beginner exercises, the first of which should be a backup of your unit's software.
