14XX series USB concerns?

Hi everyone,

I've been a loyal Garmin nuvi 350 user for years now and just upgraded to the 1450LMT. No real reason to get it but the price was to good to pass up.

I hate the non-powered mount. The 350 has the wonderful powered mount that makes for quick mounting vs the 1450 and it's 2 step (plug USB in, and clip in) process.

I've read many posts on the web where people have reported that the USB jack is a real weakness on this series. Should I just be careful with the connector and not worry about it? I was also thinking about maybe finding a short mini USB extension "pigtail" that stays permanently attached to the back of the unit to avoid stressing the connector.

Sorry for the long post. I guess I've been spoiled by the reliability of my 350 and expect the same from the 1450.

My solution

I keep the traffic cord wrapped around the unit before plugging it in to the power supply. At a motel, I take the whole unit, mount & cord into the room so that I am not unplugging the cable from the unit every night.

So Far So Good

I have the 1490 for about 6 months. I deliver new cars so I plug and unplug the unit about 5 times a day or more. No problems so far.

With all the faults of the 14xx series>>>

The cord has not been one of them for me.
