The microSDHC card to which that link takes me is a Class 4 card, which means that it is a very slow card.

For some applications, the slow speed would be of no consequence. However, I would hesitate to use this card in any application in which a reasonably fast read or write speed is of any consequence, and that may - or may not - include in a GPS that is providing real-time moving maps.

If anyone has used a card like this in a specific GPS model with satisfactory results, that would be useful information about suitability for that particular GPS.

With best wishes,

I pretty much only buy Sandisk Class 4 SD cards. With my nuvi 855, it is home to the very large jcv file where it works well. Ditto for its use on my nuvis with a detailed topo map in a real-time moving map as I drive forest roads. Even more to the point, I have the Android CM7 operating system on a Sandisk Class 4 SD card to run Gingerbread on my B&N nook color where it successfully streams video and has all the data write and reads of an operating system. In fact, on the nook color forums, the Sandisk Class 4 is the most recommended card for running Android as it is more troublefree than other Class 6-10 cards. I don't have experience with the Kingston brand, but wouldn't hesitate to recommend Class 4 cards (except possibly for live video or audio recording).

I agree with you that I look forward to reading others' reports on SD cards brands and classes to see if there are any issues with using them for maps or other purposes on their GPS units. It does seem from the link above that Class 10 cards are only worth the extra cost when the device uses a high speed bus I/F. I wonder what bus speed our GPS units use.

SD speed class

Keep in mind that the speed class rating is for sustained write speed. And as far as I know, none of the nuvi menu functions write to the SD card ... it is treated as a read-only device unless it is mounted as a drive volume on your computer. While faster write times usually would also indicate faster read times, there is no guarantee of that. The manufacturers claim conformance to the SD speed class, but I don't think any independent verification of their claim is enforced. I have used the freeware H2TESTW program and have found some Sandisk class 4 cards to actually perform better than no-name class 10 cards.

I have tried various brand and speed class cards from class 2 to class 10 in my two nuvi's (755T and 855). To be honest I have not been able to detect a noticable difference in the real-world performance. Maybe it would have more impact on the newer nuvi models.
