Lifetime maps and new unit?

So I purchased lifetime maps awhile back. If I buy a new unit does the lifetime maps carry over to the new unit? Thanks

It is my understanding that..

It is tied to the specific unit for which you purchased the lifetime update.

In other words . . .

No.

Currently have: SP3, GPSMAP 276c, Nuvi 760T, Nuvi 3790LMT, Zumo 660T

.

However, if you do some research, you will probably find that the price of the new units that include the Lifetime Maps is not much higher than the price of the new units without the Lifetime Maps.

Changed pricing scheme

Yes, the pricing schemes have changed in the last couple years. Units with lifetime maps do not carry the premium that they used to carry in the past. I'm slightly hoping that my unit will die so I can justify one with newer features.

Why the need to justify?

Refurbished option with lifetime maps

For what it is worth I purchased a refurbished 1350LMT about a month ago for 99 dollars from www.compusa.com. When received the unit looked new and has worked flawlessly. I know that some don’t feel comfortable with refurbished units however, my 680 and 765T are also refurbished units looked new when purchased and have performed perfectly.

trackerguy

I figured that would be the case. Thanks for the replies.

What does that mean?

What does that have to do with a new GPS unit or with the Lifetime Map Updates?

I was curious too. I thought ads were only involved with free traffic.

As ford devices, I bought the lifetime maps for my 765T and I hope to keep it alive for many years. I am really not interested in any of the newer Garmin devices. The biggest worry for me is that I am going to have to start deleting voices and other extra files from my device to make room for the newer maps. 2012.40 with the full JCV file is getting pretty close to filling my device. I am still running stock and have not yet removed anything. I do hope Garmin eventually provides a way to install the maps directly to an SD card installed in the unit.

How much space left?

Aardvark, I too have a 765T with lifetime maps (running 2012.4)and have found no real reason to want a newer GPS.

While I have removed some files myself, I still have what looks like lots of space free (732mb). When you do a "Properties" on your unit while connected to your PC, how much space is left on your stock unit?

Have you done a backup? If not, you ought to do one now. If so, how much space do all the files in the backup take on the PC?

It seems a little unfair

To lose lifetime maps if your unit dies and you are replacing it. I understand not having two active units at the same time. Oh well. Rules are rules

new unit

Sometimes it's best just to get a new unit. A lot of them come with the lifetime maps and traffic.

i would...

I would just go with the lifetime maps for a 3or 4 year old unit.

Sometime hope needs help

I had an old TV that I kept threatening to "accidentally" break with the vacuum cleaner handle but it died on it's own before I ever got around to it.

new unit better deal

If your unit is already 2 years old, the batteries are going to fail or something else. You can buy 4.3" Garmin with Lifetime traffic and maps for under $130 on sale and 5" for not much more than that. Don't waste the $90 on the maps for an old unit

Lifetime maps

You are correct. It only applies to the original unit for which the maps were purchased.

I think the lifetime maps

I think the lifetime maps should work on only one device but you should be able to transfer it.

How would Garmin know that you were no longer using the updated maps on the old unit?

Would you be willing to revert the unit back to its original maps?

And even if you would be, they still wouldn't have any way of checking compliance.

I remember reading that Garmin may transfer lifetime maps

If your unit is stolen. I think this is the only situation where they would do that.

Well, Garmin did transfer mine when I had a new defective GPS replaced under warranty.

A couple of points . . .

1. There are a couple of features and performance issues with newer units that make hanging on to an older model interesting. Among them (model dependent):

- MP3 player,
- Stereo FM Transmitter,
- Better Bluetooth implementation,
- Better display resolution when zoomed out (you see secondary streets when zoomed farther)
- Onward Bluetooth pairing to the vehicle (Nuvi 765)

. . . and more.

Note that some of the newer models do have some interesting features not found in older ones, but IMPO the balance is tipped in favour of the older models.

2. Battery issues? Replacement batteries are cheap.

3. Memory issues? Do you really NEED EVERY part of North America or Europe? You CAN always delete the onboard maps and send relevant map slices to your navigator from Mapsource. You would still have 95% of North America.

As long as you can get Garmin to repair or replace your old navigator you can get the lifetime maps transferred to the new unit. When a unit is lost or stolen the lifetime maps go with it - claim the value for the option from your insurance company.

lifetime maps

I think Garmin defines Lifetime Maps as the life of the unit. Not the owners life. Heh heh.

Yes, Garmin will transfer it if the unit is replaced under warranty. For a "stolen" unit, it likely would be on a case by case basis because it would be easy for the user to report it "stolen" when it really was not.

The user, however, cannot transfer the Lifetime Maps to a different unit at their own option.

Memory for JVC files

My 765t with lifetime maps will accept the large jcv file without issue. I deleted the voice files for languages I do not speak. My 885t, also with lifetime maps, will not. So I just erase the jcv file from the garmin and put one on the mini SD card of the 885t (8gb but it will accept up to 16, I believe). It's an additional step but doesn't take long. And it works fine. You have to create the same directory structure on the SD card for the jcv file but that is simple.

I do not find the FM transmitter of my old units to be useful. But I use the mp3 playback regularly. I'd like to have the newer traffic setup with input coming from user cell phones and I think I might like the Garmin learning my routes but these features do not make up for a lack of MP3 capability on the newer units. It is just too convenient to flip the radio to aux, put some tunes up on the nuvi, set the destination, and know if I get a phone call it will switch things around automatically.

I just purchased a Garmin

I just purchased a Garmin nuvi 2450 LM for $109.95 from BeachCamera on a great one day sale. Free shipping and no taxes. Very, very pleased so far.

Life time map update

If you buy another gps and choose the LT maps you don`t need to carrying over subscription from older one. Life Time maps tied with the unit you buy.

lifetime updates

its only for the current unit that u buy
